Helix 7 and US2 on older Terrova

Looking at buying a Helix 7 for a bow unit. What I’m not sure is how well it will work with my older Terrova. Will the new Helix 7s with DI be able to connect to the Terrova via US2? Second, will a Helix with DI be able to use the built in US2 ducer?

I’m looking at some variation of Helix 7s with networking. I don’t really care if it has DI or not. The big deal for me is that I can use the built in US2 ducer.

Follow up, can the DI units also be converted to use for ice fishing? I know a different ducer is needed, only researched the GPS models and not the DI ones before tonight.

    1. Your “old” Terrova with US2 transducer is not DI-compatible. It only reads 2d sonar. You could strap your DI transducer to the Terrova and use that if you wanted to.
    2. You don’t “need” an ice fishing transducer. The standard transom mount transducer will work. Just drill a shallow hole next to your fishing hole, pour a little water in it and put your transducer in it. An ice fishing transducer would be simpler, but it’s not required.

Ron, He doesn’t care if it reads in down imaging mode, he just wants to be able to hook the unit to the US2 transducer and get a 2D display. Are you saying that the Helix will not read at all with the US2 transducer? (I don’t know the answer to that, so that’s why I’m asking)

I just bought a new Helix this year. I also have a Legacy Terrova on my boat. I was able to connect the new Helix to my Terrova and use the built in Terrova transducer. The SI does not work but I am able to read water depths. This is all new and I haven’t spent a lot of time on the water with everything yet but when I change the transducer frequency I can get the DI screens to be visible.

HuntinDave phrased my question better than I could waytogo Sounds like Walldows has similar equipment and gets 2d readings. Finding some sales where the di units are actually cheaper than the ones with only 2d.

Little extra, I want to map a lake in Ontario. The way I’m justifying the purchase is if I can also use it connected to my Terrova at the bow. Neither “want” is particularly important so I need to convince myself to part with the cash.

Yes, you’ll be able to connect it and use the US2 transducer (with the Humminbird adapter cable) and you will only get 2D sonar readings. If you don’t care about the DI, why are you looking to get a DI unit and not just the GPS unit?

Depending on sales events, the DI unit may actually be cheaper to purchase. Plus, down the road you will have DI if one needs to upgrade their trolling motor. Also the DI unit may have a higher resale if that comes up for any reason.
