There are numerous threads here on the Helix 7. Do yourself a favor and read the manual and spend sometime going through the menus in simulation mode. It will be time well invested. These are rather complex pieces of equipment and require some time investment from you to make use and know how to use all the features.

Search YouTube and there’s some great videos on all the settings for ice. Helped me out a lot

Ice Cap is dead on point! I recently got the Ice Helix 7 and I’m still learning the functions of the unit. Besides the battery issue I recently had I really like this unit!

make sure you have the latest software installed. 2.18 for most units.

Agreed, but theres about 24 different Helix 7 models. Make sure you get the right update, and use a 32g card or less. Class 10 speed..

Im taking my friends H7 Ice to Winnipeg next month, primarily because it will run the new LM Winnipeg chip, when my 788 will not without a SW update. I wont update the 788, because it works just fine the way it is.

I just did some research on a Helix 7, and here’s the info I found most helpful:

Watch all the videos from the last month or so on this guys page, he has Humminbird rep Matt Cook do some quick tutorials on different features:

And lastly, read the ONLINE manual, the paper manual that comes with the unit is nearly useless, use the online manual for your specific model:

Invest in an amped outdoors 12ah lifepo4, or a Dakota 10ah.

As a new Helix owner I have been watching a lot of these settings help videos (thanks for the links) and I have a question about changing your lower range from auto to a couple feet deeper than depth you are fishing. I did that, but in the videos I noticed their upper values typically show 400. Mine shows 1875. I haven’t found anywhere that setting is adjustable. Anyone know what’s up with that? I have the Helix Ice 7 GPS G2 btw.

The biggest debate I’ve had with other Helix owners is whether to run the Switchfire mode in Max or Clear. I have not used the unit in depths deeper than 25 feet, but I like clear mode. I have a friend that is convinced you have to use Max mode – his basis is on a YouTube video. I do notice a lot of interference around his unit. I am curious what others think.

Last time out the Switchfire mode was the only setting I forgot to mess with. I was too busy catching fish. I have also heard different opinions on clear or max as well. Again they are coming from youtube. I think it is something you have to decide for yourself.

The videos linked above were two of the ones I found while searching as well. I found both VERY helpful. There is another one that was helpful as well but for the life of me I can’t find now to link it. The guy catches a trout in the middle of the video is all I can remember.

Does anyone know why the ice helix 7 package unit would have a superior target separation(3/4″) vs the standard Helix mega 8″-10″ at 2.5″ target separation? I was planning on building my own Helix ice unit and just noticed this with the non ice units.

I don’t know TOM but my 7gn2 sometimes seperates the minnow head from the jigging spoon in 15 ft. I have a vexilar and run them side by side no intereference and I really like both. The helix has more features and more things to mess with on slow fishing days or times. Lots of fun or frustration depending on the day.

    I love my Helix 5.

After the latest update I have target separation between a spoon and bare drop chain in 16 and 20 feet of water.

I too watched every single video I could find for settings. I found that those are a good starting point but ultimately it comes down to monkeying with it on the ice as you are using it. I am changing settings all the time based upon what jig, spoon, lipless bait I am using.

I am running mine in clear mode.

Also zero interference issues when running 6 feet from a Vexilar. Running right next to another Helix gets squirrely but you are able to tune it so it’s not so bad.
