That’s been pretty common practice ever since the bigger SI transducers were released…most fiberglass boats run a 2D puck shooting through the hull for at speed readings and then the SI ducer for idle speeds, at least in Humminbird’s case they connect via a splitter to the head unit…
Just make sure your SI/DI transducer is lower then your high speed transducer otherwise it will block your SI. I know a man thing is not to read the instructions before install.
Is it getting turbulence from something? 10mph is awfully low speed to lose signal for 2d, but I dont have a bird either. My lowrance works at WOT.
If you install correctly you should get readings at speed. I get depth reading on plane with my garmin ducer. I would check how far you have it mounted under your hull. You may need to lower it just a little.
You could try raising the ducer to see if that helps reduce the turbulence. Raising works 90% of time 10% of time lowering it helps. Ideally you installed a plastic board on the back of the boat first before installing ducer. That allows you to move the ducer around to find the sweet spot. Installing ducer and finding it’s best spot is only part science, the other half is witchcraft and I’ve installed hundreds of ducers.
I’ve seen moving a ducer left or right an 1/8″ go from garbage to fantastic. Same with height.
The big SI ducers are poorer at getting high speed readings, but you can sometimes still get them to do it. Often times people do install the high speed small 2D ducer on back of the boat, but that too can take tuning to find the best location.
You need to get a y cable and install a high speed 2d transducer.
If an adjustment doesn’t work looks like I’m gonna have to get a second high speed ducer…..
Walleyeguy34, that’s what I had to do. I would lose bottom contact at around 20-25 mph. speaking of SI. I have a Lowrance Elite SI, I just HATE IT. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any fish on it.
I would get the high speed transducer. They’re about 100 retail but I’ve picked up a couple new ones on classified sites for 50. I fish rivers quite a bit so it’s also nice to not have the SI transducer that is $400 skimming the water on plane if you hit a log or something.

The splitter will take the 2d signal from your high-speed ducer and take the si signal from your big transducer…I rigged it the same on my boat
As soon as the Y cable is installed is blocks out the 2D coming from the 2D/SI transducer so the head unit can only read the high speed transducer for 2D sonar.
I have a high speed 2S transducer epoxied to my hull for on plane running. Running wide open throttle and trimmed up pretty high it will cut out. But it reads pretty good till around 40 mph.
