Heating Options

Hey guys, the temps are starting to dip so I am looking for some opinions on heating an attached garage. I have a 22×22 attached garage that I insulated with R13 in the walls and R30 in the ceiling and sheeted with 7/16″ osb this summer. Just trying to keep it above freezing with occasionally warming it to 60 or so if I’m working on something. What are my options? Our house is heated by natural gas so I’m thinking a hanging natural gas heater but the smallest i can find are like 30000btu and I think it might be overkill and lead to short cycling. Thanks!

Go with a Modine Hot Dawg 45k or 60k Btu or something simular to it.
The box stores and Northern Tool all have options for you.

I’d hang a 45k in there. No need to overthink it.

I have a 24×28 insulated attached garage. I had a Reznor 30K unit installed 4 years ago with no problems so far. I heat with propane, and haven’t noticed it short cycling so far. Not sure when they installed it if they set the parameters on it (how far under your set temp before the units runs) if that is even a possibility or not. I usually keep mine at 52 all winter, but not sure that matters or not for the amount of run time to keep your garage at your set temp. I would guess keeping it a little warmer like 52 instead of 40 when it’s 20 degrees outside would cause it to run a little more when it does. Can’t say how much propane I use just for heating the garage because I installed it when we started living here full time.

    ^Ditto.

You’ll quickly figure out how workable a garage is that’s just at 45-50 degrees as well. It doesn’t take much.

you won’t go wrong with a modine or reznor in the 30-50K BTU range. I have so many installed in clients garages around the country and very few issues. outstanding units.

Thanks everyone, talked to the local HVAC guy and he is going to order me a 45000btu reznor. Should have it installed by next week, just in time for me not to have to freeze my hands off while cleaning fish in the winter anymore!

I run a Reznor, love it… make sure to run a separate wire (If needed) so you can turn on just the blower fan from the Thermostat, this allows you to push out the super hot air in the middle of summer…

Along with a heater a ceiling fan is nice.
