I’m curious how many of you wear hearing protection when pheasant hunting, and if you do, what do you wear?

I know that I should, but I feel like I need to be able to hear my dog and other sounds while hunting, so that rules out traditional (i.e. cheap) methods of hearing protection. Is there a good option that won’t break the bank?

I have the Walkers Razor XV headset, it’s like putting in ear plugs but they have the noise activated protection. They also have the noise enhancement so you can hear people with them in unless guns are firing and hook you phone up to them for bluetooth music.

Surefire EP7 Sonic Defender Ultra. I wear them for Duck/Goose and Pheasant hunting. The included tether is nice for when you’re at the trucks and want to take them out for a bit to talk and not lose them.

For Target shooting, I wear Walker Razor electronic muffs and standard foam plugs underneath. I always wear double ear pro when target shooting, you can never be too careful. Plus I’m around a .50BMG enough to justify it…

How do you hear birds flush or cackle? I couldn’t imagine not being able to hear while hunting.

I dont know the answer. Im older and didnt protect my ears well throughout my life. I still hear very well, I think, but I have ringing worse than ever. I never considered wearing protection hunting. Only practicing. I wont even wear a hood because it interferes with my hearing.

I think you would be surprised with the EP7 plugs with the internal plug out. They allow a little more sound through, but still block a good majority of the gun. Or going with E-muffs with the sound turned up. You would be able to hear the flush BETTER with them on, just takes some getting used to.

Yep, I wear them at the range and when hunting. I’ve lost enough hearing already when I didn’t have a choice / was too stubborn to wear protection.

These amplify sound with stereo microphones up to 82 dB so you can still hear game, then block sounds above 82 dB. They actually improve my hearing in the field.

They make cheaper / more expensive models. This is just what I chose to get.

    Good post, Ryan.

I have decided it is time to cash in some cabelas points and hearing prtection made my list. I have noticed my ears becoming more sensitive to harsh noises than ever before. A gunshot while hunting = temporary ringing…. Normal tones and noises like a deer walking are not detectable like they used to be.

Walkers game ears – anybody have any opinions of them? I was thinking that style vs the earmuff style. Wearing earmuffs would seem to be inconvenient in the deer atand or grouse hunting and would interfere with headwear…. or not?

I don’t use hearing protection when hunting. I do however for target practice and shooting clay pigeons. I rely too much on my hearing to hear the birds, dogs, other people, etc. when out hunting. And it’s not usually a ton of gun fire, especially if you’re spread out as a group.

This one is interesting, I kind of like the ability to do multiple things with it at the same time. I also like listening to tunes when hole hopping and think this would work good for that, too.

Love the options so far, thanks again and keep them coming.
