I just received a couple photos from Brad Hawthorne, taken by Dean Fisher, of a big crack that opened up today with the high winds that runs from the north end of the lake all the way to Big Point. The crack is 80-100 feet wide. It will take awhile to heal this one up. Use your heads out there.

Yes, the entire north shore of that lake is volatile even well into mid winter season. Red Door struggles every year with the shifting and heaves even as late as late January or February taking out their offshore bridges to the flats.

In fact the main lake ice sheet never stops shifting. Right now it’s still very early, only December 2nd. The south and east bays don’t have the main lake issues so s/b okay for now.

I wouldn’t even thing about heading out to areas on the main basin until the end of December and even then only once north and west side resorts have checked and opened their accesses.

I almost made the choice to go to duluth instead of URL glad I didn’t go to duluth.

So when you have to call the rescue team, I am assuming you have to pay a fee or fine?

Wonder what #36 was thinking when he decided to jump in the water and swim to shore! Testing the Striker Suit?

The news report I read, indicated the angler walked to shore thru chest deep water. Given the choice of floating out over deeper water while waiting for help, or walking back thu chest deep, I might do the same if I was totally familiar with the area.

Just stay off the ice. Period. It’s not worth risking your life for a crack at a few fish.

If you head out there, you may find 35 flashers and some nice rods floating on an ice shelf! I’m pretty sure you aren’t allowed to bring your gear back on a rescue…

I bet he wanted to save his gear. You can’t generally bring your gear with on rescue efforts.

No, I read elsewhere they actually took gear too. Saves a second trip for the guys trying to save gear later.
