Normally our fishing trip takes us to Lac Seul, we all know that situation. Myself and 2 friends in their late 70’s first time on Kab. We’re staying near the Ash river and would enjoy catching some Walleye and Crappies more than other species although anything that bites is a bonus. Not seeking any gps coordinates, but could use a spot or 2 to start for ideas. Most of our trips are short, these guys can fish but their age makes us go to shore more often than other boaters, but depending on the weather range isn’t the issue.
Thanks in advance form me and the old timers

The locals should give some experienced gentlemen like yourselves top notch and current information to help you catch fish. Let us know if they don’t.

I’ll be up for the weekend also. I haven’t heard much for recent reports. I know the reports on opener were all over the board from skunked to easy limits.
I’d be looking at wind blown points, rock piles, and weedlines in less than 12ft of water for walleyes. Im sure they’re some deeper too, but I imagine the shallow bite to be best for a couple more weeks at least. Stay mobile. If you’re not finding fish try moving a couple miles down the lake, they are constantly moving and the can be a lot of dead water out there. Another option would be to fish the deep mud basin areas on kab for perch and saugers. For the Crappies, all I can say is these they are limited and heavily pressured. If you’re lucky enough to find some please practice selective harvest and or release the largest ones.
    Good luck up there!

If you want some action, try casting the shorelines/island points with a Berkley flicker shad or the like. You will catch a mixture of smallies and pike, with an occasional walleye thrown in. There’s a ton of places within a couple miles of the Ash River mouth to do this.

Bite was very inconsistent for us last week. We would find the occasional walleye shallow (less than 10′) but certainly not like openers that were within days of ice out and cooler temps. Main lake was mid 50’s and bays were in the 60’s, we spent a day in lost bay and it was mid to upper 60’s. Most consistent walleye bite we found was 15-20 feet late in the day, minnow or a leech seemed to work. All of our larger (20″+) walleyes were in less than 10′ though, just no consistency enough to build a pattern I could confidently repeat. We did also notice shallow there is a TON of forage swimming around.

Warning, if you wander off on any of the park trails, guard yourself for ticks. I think I wiped out the first batch of them on cruiser lake trail, after lunch the day we were in lost we hiked to Agnes lake and back, afterwards I quit counting after pulling 20 off just myself (and still hadn’t gotten all of them on me) but between the three us us we plucked off well over 50 ticks. Would have been a site had anyone else been in the area as we all stripped down to our undies to check for the little devil’s.

I haven’t fished it in years but I had heard the strategy is to hit weed lines in the early day with a light jig and crawler. Once it gets to mid morning, start looking for deeper structure with jigs/lindy rigs. My guess is slip bobbers would also work.

Also, don’t overlook any wind blown shorelines or points even if they are shallow. If you get wind and clouds the walleyes will move up shallow. You can throw about anything at them but burning cranks would be my go to.

Thank you everyone for the info and quick ideas, it’s greatly appreciated. We should be ok but new water is always scary/exciting to learn.

The Ellsworth rock garden has nice docks and rest room facilities which open up not having to run all the way back to ash river if venture out that way. It seems the few times I have been there the best success came on windy days. Good Luck!
