30+ cans of Hamm’s
A dozen cans of assorted flavors of Spam and I’m excited and nervous to get underway.
Thursday a friend (22 years old) and myself will be loosening the mooring lines and turning the old Carver downstream to the destination of Muscatine IA. We’ve rented a slip for at least one night to visit with our box friend Jerry Purviance from Jerry’s Bait and Tackle. Then turning the boat/camper around and heading home.
We’re planning on traveling “on the hook” (anchored) as much as possible at night to enjoy the Mississippi away from the crowds and get a little evening cat fishing (or whatever bites) in along with making up our own Mark Twain stories. With the flow, we’ll be clipping on the way down with the twin 454’s idling along but paying through the nose on the way back. I’m figuring 3-4 days down and the rest working the way back. Of course the wild card is the time it takes to get through the locks and slowing down for fishing boats. I’ll be watching the MarineTraffic app to help time the lockages.
I told Jerry that I wanted to find some Silver/jumping carp and he replied with “don’t worry, they will find you!” So that will be interesting. I hope to check in here with some photos of all the big fish we catch along the way. LOL!
Hey FBRM @andyisder is 15 mph to fast to troll a deep diver at?
So from now until Thursday, I’m working on the finishing touches for a safe and reliable trip. Like replacing the Starboard heat exchanger and an oil pressure sending unit on the Port. (B.O.A.T.)
This will be my first extended trip. I always thought the end of the earth (and river) was at Alma. The trip down to La Crosse proved that wrong last year in the Skeeter. I keep telling the FW that if it goes too good, I’m just going to continue on to the Gulf. She knows I’m kidding because I haven’t packed any saltwater gear.
Now some of you might be wondering why the FW isn’t going with. Well, she just has a hard time sleeping knowing that the little anchor is holding all 17,000 pounds of boat from drifting downstream and over the next dam. I thought about going alone, but there are times a person needs to be in two places at once…and that just doesn’t make for a pleasurable trip. (Mostly through the locks)
I just have one question that keeps bothering me. Will we have enough Hamm’s for the two of us?
PS @boatshateme I have a full bottle of Angles Envy Rye hidden in the boat for medicinal purposes of course. Thank you!
