My wife, son, father and mother in-law and myself are leaving for Ely tomorrow morning! Staying at White Iron Beach Resort on White Iron Lake.

I’m really looking forward to getting the family away from cell phones and the TV and just enjoying the outdoors! Everyone is psyched, we’ll see how our 9 year old holds up to multiple days of fishing. Luckily there are things to do in nearby Ely and I don’t think the in-laws want to fish full time, so I shouldn’t have to worry about him getting too bored.

I’ve already been chatting with Ben Putnam, who’s given me some great info on that area(seriously, if you are looking to go up to Ely in the summer or winter, call this guy!) But if you were headed up for a week of fishing in the iron range, what would you be targeting?

I want to get on some smallmouth and walleye, but I know my in-laws want to find some crappies.

Only 3 more hours of wor…

I am just back from my 34th year of canoeing in the BWCWA. What a wonderful area. I am sure you will enjoy the great scenery and hopefully fishing. My trip went well. I have had better fishing on trips, but also worse. Caught enough walleye for our one fish dinner and enough small mouth and northern to keep everyone happy happy happy. Another year without seeing a moose, but plenty of other wildlife was seen. Enjoy your time in Ely, eat some ice cream at the Chocolate Moose for me.

I’ll add that to the ‘to-do’ list while we are up there :).

That lake has very very good walleye fishing that would be my mane target. White iron is okay on crappies but if I were you I wouldn’t shy away of taking a day and trailering the boat to nearby birch lake if you want crappies. Also you can go into Farm which has good walleye crappie fishing. If you want to take a good trip with the boat in that chain of lakes Garden has the best walleye fishing in my opinion. However if you are dead stuck on just Iron try and get to where the South Kawishiwi River comes in for walleyes mainly jig it or throw slip bobbers and let them drift in the current. Pike will offer up some fun anywhere you go.
    Hope this helps good luck.
