If it’s a 36 volt xi5, it seems to be a known problem that Motorguide is working on.

Austin, were you able to resolve your interference issue? Good link Ron, thank you. Has anyone tried a MG Xi5 without built-in transducer and simply ran a skimmer transducer to the unit with success? I was with a friend this weekend with a brand new setup and he is getting interference as well.
first off are you using separate battery power for the graph? your trolling motor batteries in no way should be hooked up to the “boat”. your starting battery batteries should be powering the graphs
Thank you 692. I’ll ask my friend how his boat is wired. I’m going to add this system to my boat and I know for certain my power source is different so crossing my fingers I don’t have issues.
Had a similar problem and got a couple choke rings and ran the transducer cable through them several times = no more interference.

Thanks Woody-Please forgive my ignorance, but, what are choke rings? I googled that and had a lot of different choices, none of which appeared to be anything to put around a transducer cable.

Think he’s referring to ferrite choke rings.
See the video here:
Also make sure you go into sonar settings and under installation for your transducer. Try changing to Generic, it helped me. Most people leave it at the WSBL (or the stock transducer the HDS comes with), and its technically not whats in the Xi5.
Thanks fellas! Ferrite ring arrived today and I’ll make sure we’re set to generic transducer in sonar settings. I’ll let you know our results and post them.
Socoeye, I realize that this post is from more than one year ago; however, did the ferrite ring solve your problem? If so, would you please provide a manufacturer and model number for the ferrite ring. Thanks in advance for your information.
If you have a 4 bank charger and one bank is tied to your stating battery and the others to the tm batteries try and disconnect both leads on the starting battery charger bank. It worked for me
Kirt, the on-board battery charger does not appear to be the culprit. I’m thinking that adding a ferrite ring to the xi5 transducer cable might help. Just wondering about which size ferrite core to use? Thanks.

Dr. J, I picked this up through Amazon. It helped some but if I remember right I still had some interference. I also routed my power to the TM on the opposite side as far as possible from the ducer cable. Again, seemed to help a little.
I had a Gen 2 in the bow connected to the Xi5 and I now have a Gen 3 (this year). Through software updates and settings my interference is pretty much gone in the bow. When fishing deeper say over 30 feet I get interference but that’s due to multiple transducers and not the Xi5 IMO.
Hope this helps!
Socoeye, thank you, sir, for the great information on purchasing a ferrite ring. I trust that the installation of the ferrite core will definitely reduce the interference from my xi5. You are “da Man”.
My Xi5 runs 24 volt, hooked clean to it’s own batteries, all other electronics 2 – 9’s are run from the starting battery, screens are clean.
