Double Return on 958c

I run a 958c on my bow with the transducer strapped to the trolling motor. In shallow water, I get a double (or even triple) return to the point that the unit thinks it’s 6ft deep when it’s really 3ft, for example. I imagine it’s an easy/quickf fix, but I’m not sure what to adjust. Any suggestions?

I’ll have to check my 917. I changed the transducer (internal setting). Not sure if it’s set to US2 or if I turned the US2 setting off.

have you tried reducing the sensitivity? Another option is to switch max depth from auto to 3 or 4 feet or just over actual depth.

I see the same thing with my 788. I was told that it was because of hard bottom. Funny thing is in those same spots my 997 was completely clear

I don’t believe max depth can go down ast low as 3-4′, I thought 10 was minimum, memory could serve me wrong. This works as a band aid, but your digital depth number will still read wrong which is annoying.

Are you running the most up to date software version. Check the humminbird website support tab to see. I had this issue bad on my 788 right out of the box, along with many other people and there was a software update last spring that completely cleared the issue. I also run a 997 and had no issues in the same location 20 ft away from the 788.

Software is up to date. Also, it does seem like this problem is worse over a hard bottom.

Your right,it starts at ten, then 1 ft increments after that.

The reason it is worse on hard bottom, is hard bottom returns more of the sonar signal to the unit than soft. but out side of a problem with the unit turning down the sensitivity may be the the only option.
