H 998c shutting down

    Good afternoon,
    Problem:

As I was motoring back to landing, my H 998c shut down. I pushed the power button and it powered back up, worked for awhile, but then shut down again.

    What could be going on?
    Thank you. Joe

Gosh, I would imagine it could be any number of things.
    1) Loose connection at the battery.
    2) Loose connection between the battery and fuse if there isn’t a direct wire from battery to fuse for unit.
    3) Fuse isn’t sitting right in the fuse holder or problem with fuse holder.
    4) Connections made to fuse holder.
    5) Connection at the back of the unit.
    6) Bad battery (Set your readouts to have voltage up on one of your views like sonar)
    7) Hopefully not something wrong with the unit internally

So, check all your connections and put up the voltage reading if you don’t have it up.

Raap did a great job of covering the possible problems. I’d lean toward a low voltage situation. Out of curiosity did you run at idle speed for an extended period of time when this happened? The reason I ask is some motors won’t produce enough voltage from the alternator to keep up with basic demands (lights, electronics, pumps, etc.) at low speeds. When you get up on plane and build up some RPM you’ll see full output from the alternator but some motors produce so few amps at idle that you can actually draw down a battery with the motor running.

    James,
did not know about the idle.

Thank you for your list of possible causes. No fuse. I go to the circuit box with red and black under dash. I suspect that your hypothesis about voltage is correct. My read out indicates low voltage. I put the battery on the charger to bring it up to full charge. Only two years old. Hope this is not persisted problem. Connections on back of unit are tight.

Could two batteries series together provide more voltage and solve this problem or would create a new problem?

I would definitely suggest putting a fuse (3 Amp) in place because if you don’t, that can void the warranty. At least I am pretty sure I read that somewhere. Also, I would suggest running a direct red and black to the battery, dedicated to the locator (12 gauge wire) and while doing that put a fuse in line on the red wire. You might be surprised on how much of a difference this can make. If you are connecting to the breaker box, the 12V and ground could be routed through every breaker and thus creating a more resistive path.
