788ci GPS Speed

When trolling under constant speed with the trolling motor my speed shown on the 788ci bounces constantly from about 0.2 to 2.0 mph. This is on a glassy lake with no wind. I have applied all software updates to except this last one that just recently came out, 4.96.

I am trying to troll at a certain speed for crappie fishing.

Is this supposed to be normal or should I have a somewhat steady speed shown?

    Hi,
I’m assuming that your unit has an internal antenna (ci?). Turn on your GPS Status screen (one of your “views”) and see what kind of signal quality (HDOP and Error Position) values you are getting. If the values are high your internal antenna may be (being) blocked by some part of your boat.

Yes, it has the internal antenna. Hopefully I can get to the lake this weekend to check the signal/error.

We have a 788CI with the same issues. While trolling, the speed jumps around from 0.3 to over 3.0, even though we know we are in the 2.2 mph. range.

Our “position error” ranges from 6 to 15ft. Is that high?

Humminbird says it must be the fault of the sattelites sending out the signal.???

Have you found out anything new on your speed reading issues? Ours is still acting up.
