Humminbird PC problem

    Hi everyone,

New member here, but have been lurking for a few years and decided to make the jump. Such a wealth of info available.

Here is my problem. I have a 788c and I followed the instructions I found here to convert my handheld Garmin info to a .gpx file. Now when I try to send that information to an SD card so I can upload it to my 788 I get an error message that reads

“track number exceeds the maximum allowed by the unit 50.”

Can anyone shed some light on this error message and let me know what it means? I have some good info I want to get transferred.

    Thanks,

    Craig

Just a stab in the dark here but this might be an issue where your routes have too many points to be compatible with the HBs. Humminbirds are limited to a max of 50 points per route whereas some of the Garmin units allow up to 500 points per route. That will cause an issue when you try and transfer the information.

There is a workaround though. GPSBabel is a tool that can be used to filter and simplify routes. Here’s some info on that process. I’ve not used it myself for this function but I’ve heard it works well and you’ll have a measure of control over how the routes are simplified / filtered to retain a measure of accuracy that meets your needs.

Below you’ll find a link to more info on the filtering capabilities of GPSBabel. There might be other utilities out there that do the same thing as well that could be found with a little searching.

    Thanks James,

I will look at that this afternoon and see what I can get figured out. All I want are the waypoints.

Delete the routes off your handheld first, then do the file transfer and you should be good to go.

Well I figured it out without using GPS Babel and without deleting the routes off the handheld and then re-downloading them.

I used the files I already had downloaded to Humminbird PC and then copied and pasted just the waypoits into a new file and then onto the SD card and into the 788c. It worked pretty slick doing it that way and saved a bunch of extra work. I do however see the need for a program like GPS Babel, because I am not able to do the same for the track info.

Thanks to those who replied and I hope this helps someone else with the same problem I had.
