    Good morning,
I read that a software update was available for the 998c on the Hummingbird support site. I registered my unit, log in, and found the download. I downloaded to my vista laptop and moved the download to a sd card. I placed sd card in 998c head unit and nothing happened. No up loading.
So I when back to the H support site and log in and now I can not find the soft ware down loads. Send off customer service message to H support. Very frustrating.

Are you certain that the software you were trying to upload is in fact a newer version that the software already loaded into the unit? If the software in the chip is the same as the software on the unit, nothing will happen.

    Hi,
Have you looked at the “Self Test” screen? That screen – normally hidden – can be turned on by going to the Views menu and make “visible”. I believe the factory level (was for my unit) is 4.850, while the update is 4.880.

As a sidebar, I updated my unit around the time the chatter about shallow water performance issues started popping up on the chat boards (according to the chat, it affects the latest release(s) for the all units (IE. 700’s, 800’s, 900’s, and 1100’s). I got a copy of 4.850 from “H”, and re-installed it in my unit. I’m trying to decide if its any better. I flip between the two revs on the water when I see issues.

    FYI – Roger

I will compare versions. I purchased April 16, 2010. According to forums this new version is needed.

When I did this back in January, it did not work for me either, but I just tried copying the downloaded file to the sd card. I then downloaded some PC software from HBird and opened the downloaded file through that and uploaded it to my sd card through that program. I don’t know if this is how it is supposed to work, but that is how it worked for me. It wasn’t just a download and copy the file to a card like I thought. The software must convert the file to some type of readable format or something. (I have very little understanding of what I was doing, all I know is it worked. Maybe someone who knows more can explain the exact procedure better).

    Hi,
There are two ways to update a Humminbird unit.

Method 1) Requires a special “H” cable and separate power cable. Note: works for units that have MMC/SD slots and those that do not.

Method 2) Requires MMC/SD slot in unit:

Note: The first method has been BIG TROUBLE for allot of people, so use the second method (MMC/SD slot way) if you can.

Make sure nothing else is on the SD card when preforming the update.
