Second trip out with new 898 and it rocks! I do have a question from other users. When I get into 4 fow or so, the depth reading goes wacky, jumps from .09 to 3.9 feet ect. Any ideas?? Thanks for any help.

Mine does the same thing….if I pick up speed it levels out. But if I’m going real slow in ~5ft it goes all over.

Yep, sounds just like mine….hmmmm. Next time out I’M going to just put it on 2D and see what it does.

It could be the angle of the transducer. If tilted to far down on the back of the transducer it may be missing the return in shallow water. It is always a battle with transducer angles for the best reading at slow speeds and fish arches the transducer should be level. But to get good high speed readings the transducer should be tilted forward about five degrees.

Was out yesterday and mine also does it with the motor, and everything else off….which I think rules out interference or prop cavitation. Just bounces between 3-9ft. Has anybody else called HB yet?

Tom I think you’re on to something. I’ll experiment with that next. I’m running a small boat which would probably make it more sensitive to angle, since it tends to change a lot as I move around in the boat.

Leroy are you in a small boat?

1660 Pro V, it’s food for thought. It would be easy to check out next time out.

Sensitivity settings might possibly be something to play with, but I would guess trandsducer angle as mentioned above.

    Good luck!

Shallow water issues with the 898 units will be solved with new software update in several weeks. I have found when in shallow water DI print out is closer to depth lines than switchfire. “Been there, done that” with all recommened HB suggestions. Great unit when this glitch is fixed.

My experience is that the display depth is all that is faulty in shallow water, 2D sonar, down and side image water columns remain good, unless the unit slows to a crawl.

My 997 does it, but I have to really work to get the 1197 to display badly.
