Bill, keep in mind that the 500 series units will not read the new Lakemaster chips.

    pause, rewind, replay.

Did you mean that you got ripped off while your boat was tied up somewhere? Sorry, not trying to hijack this post but I couldn’t resist asking what you mean there.

I had just loaded boat on waterand was doing the kidney dance, bathrooms are about 100 yds. from landing, pulled up by them. Time it took me to take a pee, somebody grabbed it.

Jason, will they read the older Minnesota Lakemaster chips? [several years old] I have one Lakemaster Minnesota chip and somewhere around 6 of the Navionics chips. What I’m going to say will certainly gain me an ”old timer ‘ fisherman” title lol, as the 3 locators and 3 gps I had on my white 17 1/2 ft Alumscraft boat were all black and white. I had held off on buying a color unit because I was afraid if I bought one color unit that I might want to replace them all with color which would be expensive. I was going to replace them all with black and white ones which is really ok with me. With a stand alone gps with a 5” screen and a 5” screen sonar unit [all b/w sitting next to it you get very good coverage of the area you are fishing. Kenny at Smittys talked me into color units at a great price so I told him to go ahead and put them on the new boat when it comes in. These models are not the real expensive ones but will work great for me as I don’t need as much high tech stuff like you young guys. I’m more old fashion I guess, huh, lol. Besides I don’t want to spend more than what I am spending. Super deal and I want to keep it that way as my years are starting to maybe look numbered so to speak after what I went through from a back flare up and MRI results showing last December. So I’m starting to look at things differently now and am thinking towards what I want for a retirement boat [retirement is still years away I’m hoping] and my boat speed may be mosting trolling speed unless its really flat calm. I always figured the last units I buy would be Hummingbird because they are very easy to disconnect where my Lowrance gps’s have to be pushed in and then screwed in by turning the knobs. When the knobs are tight they are hard for me to unscrew and take off due to hand problems. Work injuries really screw a guy over much more as you get older because the injuried areas get alot worse later in years. The Hummingbird units disconnect real easy and I don’t have a garage so they get taken off after a day of fishing each time. I am going with 3 of the new units [up front by trolling motor, on console, and in the back by the kicker motor]. I don’t understasnd why a new unit [unless it has a small processor in it] won’t take a single state lakes map like Lakemasters unless for some reason they just partnered with Navionics or somethinbg??? The more expensive units are out of my range money wise and I love the gps’s for trolling and deep water structure jigging so I just have to have 3 of them lol. What all have you heard about this model Jason? Thanks.

Art, I’m so very sorry to hear about that. Fishermen are a special breed, like brothers, and we all have much in commom with our love of fishing and to hear about another fisherman stealing from another fisherman is just sick. How can fishermen steal from fishermen? Its just not right. Of course stealing is never right but when a brother steals from a brother its really sick. It sounds like you really like your unit Art since you are replacing it with the same model. Thanks for sharing Art.

    Thanks, Bill

Wade, I wish I could bud but its more expensive and I just don’t have it. With only having one income and I want to fish more [cost money] so I have to be very carefull what I spend. I’m down sizing boats so it will be easier to tow with my van and use less gas towing and fishing which means the van will last longer and I have a new outboard motor to last me for many years. I figured since I’m downsizing I might as well go all the way now so I don’t have to down size twice as I want something that a small truck or car [next vehicle in the future] will be able to tow.

My Navionic chips are 2 MN/Iowa, Wisconsin, USA Rivers North, and 2 of the North multi States chips and a Lakemasters MN chip. Will they all work in the 587CI unit?
    Thanks, Bill

No Bill, they will not. The Lakemaster for Humminbird chips can only be read by 700, 800, 900, and 1100 series units (and not all of the units in each series; please see the Humminbird website for details).

The issue is processor power and on-board memory more than anything. The Humminbird exclusive features in the Lakemaster chips makes them hungry for computer resources, and the 500 series units can’t keep up with that demand. The processor, as well as differences in GPS receivers (16 channel vs 50), and screen resolution (320 x 240 vs 640 x 640) account for the price difference between the 587 and the 788.

Thanks Jason. The 587CI does have the 50 channel GPS but I figured the processor was smaller. Do you have any idea what the price difference is? Just currious. Do you know how many maps [Hummingbird Unimaps] are in the 587CI unit?
    Thanks, Bill

Bill, the Unimap in the 587 does not feature contours. The new Contour XD package has contours for ~ 3000 lakes.

Wade has some current pricing on his website.

I ran the 788 at the bow last year and was very happy with its performance.

Bill, The 587Ci is compatible with Navionics Hotmaps Premium and Gold so you’d be okay there.

If you are paying more than $400 for the 587Ci my suggestion is to sell some of those map cards here on IDO, keep one for yourself, and use the extra cash to pay $600 for a Humminbird 788C. For $150 to $200 more it is a much better unit. It has a larger screen, much better resolution, and a lot more power. I understand the money issue completely. But if it’s me, I’d much rather spend $600 on a unit I’ll love over $400 on a unit I won’t like as much. And like I said, your sitting on some extra cash if you sell all those map cards you’ve got laying around there, Bill. Just my take…
