I’m going to call Humminbird tomorrow, but thought I’d post here in case someone else has had the same experience or I’m missing something obvious.
I installed my new 1197 on Friday (thanks, Jolly Ann Marine!). It’s obviously an awesome unit. I spent Friday night and Saturday trying to run the side scan and thinking I was doing something wrong. It drew super slowly and wouldn’t tell me how deep it was. I read the manual and found that the 800 frequency would add detail. So I went out today, alone this time so I could spend time learning the HB. I turned it on and set it to 800. It was still horribly slow to draw and didn’t display a depth. Then it suddenly started working. Wow! The side scanner was drawing like crazy and everything looked great!! I noticed at this point that it was telling me the depth for the first time ever. Previously it wouldn’t run the traditional 2D sonar and didn’t display a depth. I figured I needed to change a setting and never investigated the issue. I checked out the different views (2D was working great!) and buzzed a few wingdams. The thing is amazing … or it was for 10 minutes, because then it suddeny stopped working again. I made absolutely no changes that would have made it stop working — I was just driving along.
Here’s what I mean when I say it stops working: first, it does not register a depth. The 2D sonar doesn’t work at all, period. The side imaging doesn’t work well, but it does draw a super pixelated image that is generated very, very slowly. When I say slowly, I mean that it takes 5+ minutes for the line it draws at the top to get to the bottom of the screen.
Anyway, I can only figure I got a bad transducer given the fact that it suddenly worked briefly today and stopped working with no changes made. The connection is good, I’ve reviewed all the settings in the manual (I have the Hi-Def tranducer selected, etc.).
Any ideas? Or should I get it ready to mail back to HB? Thanks in advance to anyone who has an idea.
