Can the Humminbird 1197 communicate GPS information as a talker with a Lowrance lcx 111 as a listener? I see the Humminbird’s gps output is nmea 0183 and lowrance gps input is nmea 0183. I really like the new Humminbird SI but have Lowrance units that like on my bow and stern – can’t afford to replace all my units. I curretly network my Lowrace units with the nmea cables that are included with the power cord and that works well for Lowrance to Lowrance communication. thanks

I would think, as long as both units have the nmea 0183 input and output wires, the units should be able to share a gps signal. I have hooked up lowrance units this way with no problems. Just check your wiring diagrams, should be fine.

I think I found a website that answers my question although I’d still like to hear from someone who’s done it. Here’s a good article for nmea 0183 information. web page

I ran a LCX 18c gps with the nema 0183 from the Bird 997. It works fine,But the gps track update was quite slow when trying to get to the spot on the spot! I read, somewhere, this was because of the nema, and a slight delay in the communication. You might want to check that out if it will be a issue.

Thanks Trytoofish. My plan is to use the humminbird on my console as primary navagation GPS but continue to use my exisiting lowrance units on the bow and stern when pole in hand fishing – slow speeds. What are your thoughts on that being an issue with the communication speeds you experienced?

One more question trytoofish – where did you pick up the signal from the Humminbird? I see a GPS out on the back panel of the 1197 and a nmea out cable coming out of the gps receiver – a extra line out.

You can get the nema output from the capped pigtail coming from the Y cable.Black wire to

shield (ground) and white wire to orange (NMEA out). This will connect

the Humminbird as the sending unit to the Lowrance unit as the

    receiving unit.

Another thing you need to verify is which nema your Lowrance unit is using! Lowrance switched to nema 2000 sometime after the lcx 18c and nema 0183 and 2000 will not talk to each other.

The track update at slow speed with nema is too slow IMO. I use the 997 when I need instant track update, and you also get the neat pointer arrow on the 997 also!

I should also add,I’m only familiar with the 997,there may be some difference in the 1197.

    Hope this helps!

    Good luck

Why do you want to do this? Is it because you don’t have the GPS puck for the Lowrance units?

I do have the pucks for my lowrance units but I don’t want to install four receivers on my boat. I’ve always used Lowrance units – two on the console, one on the bow and one at the stern. I’d network them together so I only needed one gps receiver installed. I’d like to switch to a Humminbird on the console for SI and would like to use that unit as my talker for the same reason. I might end up installing an additional (Humminbird) receiver and only network the Lowrance units.
