Just purchased a 997 and in process of installing and had a question about GPS location. I was looking at putting a bracket on the base mount so that the GPS puck is right behind the screen. What do you do with all of the extra cord??

My extra cable is squirreled away under the console.

Thanks Jason. I guess what I am wondering is I am looking at the ram mount where the puck is mounted immeadately behind the unit. I have 30 foot of cable and only need a foot max. I don’t think you can splice it nor do I really want to.

I have my puck about a foot from my graph and the excess cable is under the floor cable tied together. It is tied up to the bottom of the floor so it stays out of the way when I access stuff in storage. It is out of site and out of the way.

You don’t need the ram mount normally, just mount the puck directly to the floor.

I would mount your antenna at least 3′ away from your
unit. You will suffer signal quality with that RAM
    puck mount.

Thanks for the replys looks like I will try to mount it away from the unit at least 3′ I don’t want any issues with finding satellites.

FYI, on my ice-fishing box, I have my 1197 mounted not more than 6″ from my ASGR50 receiver, and I never have trouble locking in or getting a very reasonable position uncertainty (7-9 feet).

Is your receiver mounted directly behind the 1197 like
it would be using the RAM puck mount plate?

I’ve read on other forums the Humminbirds work great with this GPS adapter plate. The 3′ issue is specific to Lowrance units as some Bird users have actually used two sided tape to mount the GPS antenna right to the back of the unit with no interference issues.

Just about as I ran everything tonight and going to pick up some more wire. Going to bolt the ducer up and look the other way and screw the gps puck to the boat. Then off to the wing this weekend to play!! Nothing like sitting in the boat as I can’t wait!
