The Humminbird website is undergoing some enhancements in recent days. For example, pages are now available for the new 800-series units, the 898 (GPS/Sonar/Side/Down Imaging) and the 858 (GPS/sonar).

    Check ’em out:

I’m anxiously awaiting the arrival of the 858 for the bow of my rig!

Cool, thanks for the note guys. I’m tentatively looking at getting an 898cSI, possibly.

It’s my understanding that they have 4000ptp power not the 8000 stated in the spec and overview area. I spoke with HB several days ago…….surprised they have not corrected this yet!

I just checked and the 998 and the 898 has the same spec’s. They are the same except for the display size.

You are correct “if you are useing 2dsonar only.”….at 8000ptp you do NOT have side or down imiaging. I just got off the phone with HB and spoke to a teck rep named Juanita and she gave me permission to use her name.Sorry, not trying to get a peeing contest going here just tryjing to clarify. Believe me I wish it were 8000PTP.

Excuse my ignorance, but how will a unit with 4000W peak-to-peak power output be inferior to a unit with 8000W peak-to-peak? Will this difference be of any notable significance when used on the water…it is worth spending approximately $500 more?

On inland lakes and rivers, you do not need 8000w peak to peak. That’s 1000 watts RMS. If you’re not fishing in the ocean, you don’t need that kind of power. All the top Lowrance, Eagle, Humminbird, and Garmin units you all have been running for years in these parts have been 500 watts (or 4000ptp). There’s a lot of misunderstanding about power out there. Bottom line, you don’t need more than 500 watts (4000ptp) for inland lakes and rivers.
