    Hi–
I just registered to this site and this is my first post. GREAT, GREAT information here!
If I am understanding right, the Insight will NOT display 3d data on Humminbird? That is too bad, B/C those are some GREAT displays! It looks like Navionics Hot Platnum maps, though, WILL display 3d imagry on HB? Is the display of that comparable to what the HDS units will display with Insight?

Platinum is similar to Insight and will run on Humminbird. I suspect Humminbird will be able to run the Lakemaster Insight in the near future as well.

    Platinum looks like this…

Thanks! I think I like the looks of the Insight better, though I’m not sure, it’s hard to say and a guy should really make the right choice here. Is there anywhere a guy could see a closer zoom sample of 3d comparing the two (LM Insight and N-Platnum)?.

    Thanks again,

    Rick

Currently the Insight mapping chips from Lakemaster will not work in a Humminbird unit. That product line is “lowrance only” at this time. When will a 3D product be available from Lakemaster for the HB units? Not sure. But you can bet there will be one.

I’m sorry, I keep thinking of more quesitons….is the 3-d view an application to be used while actually fishing structure, or more of a general out-zoom application to be used for getting an idea of what it looks like down below,

    Thanks again,

I used the Platinum a couple times this summer on my 1197. It’s fun to look at, but frankly, I wasn’t “wowed” by it’s actual fish-finding utility.

In contrast, the Humminbird-exclusive features offered by the Lakemaster chips add a whole new dimension to your GPS cartography experience. Some of those features are illustrated below.

The 3D mapping is most useful in a “wide angle” view of an area. Changes in shading indicate changes in depth. As you continue to zoom in you focus more and more on a particular area and you start to loose some of the context. As you continue to zoom in you become more and more likely to be looking at a screen of a single color unless you’re on a very, very sharp contour. For that reason as you continue to zoom in the 3D mapping reverts to 2D as you get past a certain point.

As for the Humminbird exclusive features Jason mentioned like shallow water offset, shallow water highlight and depth range highlight… those features offer users a level of control over the display of data never seen before in gps mapping. And they’re not available on Lowrance or Garmin at this time. Here’s that video. And if you have time check out Jason’s website for a text version.
