Any chance of Skeeter Boat Center having some Lakemaster Chips for sale at the seminar?

    Doubtful, Kirt.

I’ll have my WI chip available to play with in my 1197, so you can get a taste for all the Humminbird exclusive features on a hi-def lake. Good chance for you to see the Green Bay area….in advance of your trip out there to fish AIM.

If you’re ready to pick a chip or two up, I understand that Wade is stocking them:

Jason, Would you recommend only a lakemaster chip and skipping the navionics bundle from the factory?

The pre-loaded Navionics maps are from 2006 or 2007, and cannot be updated either by the factory or by a download. The last I heard was that there are no plans to offer more recent maps in those NVB models.

My STRONG recommendation is to use mapping chips for your cartography needs. If you’re in an area covered by Lakemaster, those chips are the only way to go, IMHO. Lake coverage is increasing, the detail and accuracy is astounding, and the Humminbird-exclusive features will take your GPS mapping experience to the next level!

Thanks Jason, I just didn’t want to spend extra if I was going to get a Lakemaster chip anyway and the Navionics didn’t do me any good.

I have the built in NVB the only nice thing about it is if you take a fishing trip out side the area your chip covers I still have a decent lake map with out buying a seperate chip for a one time trip.

I agree with both Jason and Tom. For the region you fish the most, the map cards are the only way to go, whatever brand you choose. As Jason pointed out, the Navionics data on the preloaded units is from 2006. It’s not bad data, and in fact some of the lakes and especially the Great Lakes has outstanding detail and coverage. But both Lakemaster and Navionics have updated the data and corrected some errors. There have also been a large number of lakes added to the current lineup by both manufacturers in that time. Whether I have the NVB package or not, I’d still want an updated Lakemaster or Navionics card for my GPS.

And, as Tom pointed out one of the main advantages of the NVB preloaded models is that you have the entire USA including inland lakes, rivers, and the Great lakes covered. If you travel to other regions, the preloaded maps are really handy. If you only fish a smaller geographic region I don’t see a need for the preloaded model myself. Purchase a base unit and then add the most recent Navionics or Lakemaster card.
