Now that Humminbird’s Down Imaging is being rolled out to the masses, I wanted to take a few moments to share some recent DI work from Pool 4 of the Mississippi River.

This first image is a 3-way split screen showing Down Imaging (upper left), traditional 2D sonar (lower left) and Side Imaging (right). The thing to notice in this capture is the speed: almost 42 mph. Very nice SI and DI performance at this speed, and I would go so far as to say that the DI is clearer and more usable than the 2D sonar that most people rely on at high speeds.

Here’s a very nice 3-way split screen again showing a big pod of suspended fish….easily observed in DI and 2D. SI shows that the pod of fish stretches far out to both sides of the boat.

Some of the bottom-hugging saugers that we’ve been targeting lately with our daytime vertical jigging pattern. Their presence within a foot or two of the bottom is why it’s so important to keep that jig hovering in place for long lengths of time.

Here’s a 2-way split with DI and the chart, supplied by my Lakemaster-Wisconsin chip. I had just (barely!) passed over the first small wingdam downstream from the rollers. The detail of the rocks on the wingdam is pretty nice.

I guess my trails make it obvious where I’ve been fishing lately!

Nice articles Jason. Might have to work some of that “missing fish” article into some of my geometry lessons. That is, if there is no copyright infringement in doing so

    OK, one more.

This is the MN side of the scour hole below the rollers. I’m showing it primarily because of the detail that is present in the Side Imaging portion of the 3-way split screen. The sharp lip where the depth really drops off, the swirling pattern of the hard-packed sandy bottom, the big suspended fish (probably a paddlefish) that also shows up in the Down Imaging portion…it’s all there.

    Neat stuff!

Ill cast to the right side, you can cast to the left, OK

Images seem clearer than ever before. True?

The second set of pics …I know that spot. Was down on Saturday, there were a couple of areas that would just light up the depthfinder. Would have been cool to have a camera just to see what kind of fish they were.

    Jason,
Does the down imaging pick up and show changes in bottom content, like soft to hard, sand to gravel, etc?

It sure does, just as SI does.

Take a look at this screen capture, focusing on the SI portion (right) first. Hard bottom (in this case, packed sand) appears brighter than soft bottom (muck, in this case). The separation between hard and soft is fairly distinct, correlating to the base of the shoreline-related break.

That same transition from hard to soft (bright to dark) is visible in the Down Image, as a diagonal area about mid-way through the image, running from upper left to lower right.
