Some more information on the ability of Humminbird sonar/GPS combo units to read Lakemaster chips trickled out today as well. Beyond simple chip compatibility, Humminbird will offer a couple of cool options that will make the cartography information more functional as well.

    On to the news:

For the first time, Humminbird Combo units in the 700, 900 and 1100 Series will be compatible with select LakeMaster ProMap Hi-Definition Lakes cartography packages. Six different packages will be available for the next generation Humminbird models. They include Dakotas, Iowa/Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and LOTW/Rainy (Ontario, Canada).

In addition, Humminbird will offer exclusive features on each LakeMaster ProMap package. New Lake Level Offset gives anglers the ability to adjust (or synchronize) the depth contours and shorelines of the LakeMaster charts on their Humminbird unit to reflect the actual water levels of lakes, reservoirs, and rivers. This will also change the depth number at the contour line. And the exclusive Highlight Depth feature allows the user to select and highlight a Depth Range for easier targeting of productive water.

For those who already own a 700, 900, or 1100 Series Combo, a free software download will be available at humminbird.com that will make their unit LakeMaster compatible.

The LakeMaster-Humminbird Digital SD Cards will be pre-loaded with the selected ProMap Hi-Def cartography and retail for ~ $110 each.

I think it may be time to switch from Lowrance to HB. Sounds like some nice features.

I don’t know about you guys, but this sounds really cool to me. I think river AND lake anglers will benefit from this.

We all know that rivers rise and fall during the course of the year, and this feature will eliminate a bunch of mental math needed to have river depth contours correlate with actual water depth.

Likewise, as many areas of MN and WI are particularly dry, many of our lakes sit at much lower levels than we are used to. Being able to adjust the depth readings on our GPS displays will help us identify new “danger” areas that aren’t in play during normal water levels, and also point out spots that weren’t “fishy” before because they were too deep, but may hold numbers of fish now.
