settings?

    Jason,
Would you mind posting your settings for sensitivity, contrast…… I’m very curious to know how yours is set. Since I did the software upgrade this winter, I have been a little upset on the drop in image quality. I’m sure its getting the right balance of setting again and not the actual enhancements inb the last upgrade. Which also makes me ask which software level are you on? If your on the older, that explains a lot. Prior to upgrading, it was like having a Nikon underwater camera down there. Now, most of my images are very grainy. I’m still able to pick out schools of bait fish and suspended pannies. There just not as clear as before. Almost thinking about reverting back to my software level as of March 2008

Will do….as soon as it stops raining. I’m still waterlogged from a long day on the water yesterday.

Randy, before it stops raining, I should say that I’ve been capturing images on two different units lately…a 997 and an 1197. Both are running the most recent software, 4.510.

I wish I would have kept my 997 for the bow to use with the interlink and also as a monitor off of my 1197.

When I updated my 997, I seemed to get a little bit sharper images, if anything with the newer software… Maybe it just has more to do with settings, contrast, etc?? (hopefully??) (Is it possible that transducer angle might have shifted or need to be re-adjusted a little??)

    Good luck,

    Mike

I Know when I updated my 797 my images improved immensely with the enhancements.

What are you using for your setting for scroll speed? To fast or too slow will blur the image. Are you using the SI enhancment menu?

    Good luck,

    Mike

I’m at work right now, so I can’t look at it. It took me about 3 trips out last year to get the images crystal clear. I understand the entire speed adjustment. Its just the peak performance of images “pre-upgrade” are better than post upgrade. Even Jason’s are not anywhere near as clear as what mine were last year. But they are better than what mine are now. Transducer has been checked and is fine. Still perfectly 5 degrees down of the transom.

FYI – for those that wonder about the sonar quality shooting through a glass boat. Look at the snapshot I have in this post. This is a 1197 with the Y cable and a puck glassed in my hull.

Before is a shot on top of a very steep drop off on a reef in Lake Erie. You can see the gobies in the snot grass and a few predator fish

After is in a clear water lake with visibility to easily 12′ I can’t find my SD card with all my Dutch Hollow shots from 08. But see how grainy the image is. My 08 shots of this creek would show clouds of bait fish and crappies following them

In one pic your doing 4mph and the other your doing 5mph can cause the grainyness with out changeing the scroll speed to match boat speed.

Tom, I ranged it from .4 mph to 8 mph with the same screen speed and I held it steady at 4 mph and changed the screen speed – Doesn’t matter, it stays grainy looking. The SI shot I put up here at 5.0 is the clearest, so the screen speen and boat speed were the best match. I changed the enhancement to each level, and started to change the sensitivity. In the old software level I had it set for best image at 4.5 mph and could get great shots at 3.0 to 5.5mph

I know I need to quit fishing so much and spend the time to dink around with the settings more. I just want to get a better handle on the what the software upgrade changed so I can get it dialed in quicker.

Are you using 455khz or 800khz?

Main difference I see in those images is depth… under 10ft vs almost 30 ft. Obviously you will lose detail as you get deeper, but I’m not sure why it appears hazy/grainy, unless it is simply depth related. Maybe speed (~5mph) is ok for shallow waters, but a little worse at deeper depths? Any other interference sources? kicker, electric, other transducers, motor trim, etc??

Any shots with the new software under 10 fow?

    Just some food for thought.

I had some issues when I updated my 797 to 4.5 lousy looking screen and to dark. I had to go back, reset to factory defaults reload a past update, then reload 4.5 again. What a difference it made on my unit.

Thanks Tom, that is exactly what I’m doing this weekend. No scheduled activities other than hanging out with my Daughters. Good excuse for a boat ride! Plus, with the “re-loaded” upgrade on the sd card, I can do it while I’m out on the water. No need to go home and try again next time on the water

Good point about resetting the defaults.. Did you do that last time? HB hightly recommends it, but I’m not sure if it would cause your problem or not.. Certainly worth a shot to re-try it after resetting the defaults.

Yep – always, ALWAYS return to factory defaults, load upgrade, confirm upgrade, then tinker with settings
