How hard is it to download updates for hummingbird electronics? I registered my new electronics and it shows there are updates and I am wondering if I should do this before I put the boat in the water.

    Not hard at all
Follow all of the directions, might want to print them or be able to view them when doing it.
I would recommend doing it as there may be problems corrected and / or improvements you may like.

Is there any special sd card to buy or can a person just use any sd card?

I don’ think it matters for speed during the updates.
I have used 4 GB standard cards,

but I feel that by using an 8GB 95mbs cards ($)
the performance is better during on-water operation.
This is probably more an issue with the units with faster processors
so that the card I/O can keep up.

Am I understanding your post correctly? After a person updates the hb you have to the same sd card or do you use the lake master chip?

the SD card is just to save the files to — download from web site to PC — put on card and then in HB — pull out and put chip in

Sd card can also B used to save your files from the Bird and put on your PC
