360 Imaging

Anyone out there with actual experience using a 360 Imaging? Seems like there was a lot of hype a year or two ago about his but I’ve heard of very few people that have one. So far, not seeing any of the fishing shows demonstrating other than a quick reference. Maybe its not that helpful or there have been bugs with it?

Watch the videos on this link:

    http://www.learnsideimaging.com/FREE-webinar.html

Dr. Jason Halfen doing a seminar at Mille Lacs this past fall, shows the strengths of using 360 imaging. When I upgrade the boat in 2-3 yesrs, I know I will be getting 360 imaging.

I got to check it out at ICAST. – not real world. I think the real issue is still cost. Very expensive “accessory” item

I liked it when they dropped it to $1499 as a transducer on the trolling motor…. but was disappointed when it wouldn’t work on the iPilot Link Terrova I bought last year.

I ran one on my boat all last year. I know one thing for sure, if I have any choice in the matter I will NOT be without one this year. The uses it has just on the river in the spring were worth it in itself. We anchor a lot and you can honestly sit there and watch were the school of fish move to and when new fish come through.
I can honestly say, we would watch the screen, cast to where the fish were and catch them. Would have a slow time (10 min) and would go back and look at the screen and see that the fished moved 100 feet or so and start casting there and start catching fish again.
Same type of thing on Mille Lacs on the mud flats or gravel bars, you can actually watch the fish move around.

Im sure there are many more uses than what I have used it for so far, but with that said I would not hesitate to put another one on myself.

I’ve heard of guys mounting a side imaging transducer on their bow mount trolling motor and turning it in either direction, kind of a “poor mans” 360. When I do my upgrade this spring that is the route I’m going. Humminbird 899 HD si with GPS , transducer mounted to trolling motor.

Eric, this is exactly one of the reasons I have been interested in 360. In many of the small to medium sized rivers, they don’t have mapping of any kind. My thought as a bass fisherman would be to move upstream and see the structure ahead (or fish) to cast to. Side Imaging is only out the sides and rear, where 360 Imaging allows you to see ahead. I think it would be great.

It does work well for that but I would say it works even better if you are sitting still. The picture quality and detail seem to be a lot better when sitting still. With that said you can still see the structure and fish when moving but the slower you go the better the picture from what I have experienced.

I’m usually an early adopter on stuff like this, but with the high cost and the fact that it won’t attach to my terrova I’m holding off for now. If it were a $500 or maybe even a $1000 accessory that I could install on my terrova I’d be in for sure. It sounds like it would be a great tool for any presentation where the boat is stationary.

Theres no reason in the world that Humminbird could not offer just the module to mount on the bottom of a Terrova, that looked like a weedeater head…. other than money.. If they offered that, Id be all over it. I dont want to spend $ on a deployment system I dont need or want on my boat, particularly, when I already have the deployment system on the boat already..

    Eric,
Have you tried it much in shallow water, and if so, is it still a good tool to locate fish when anchored and casting. I have many spots where I pitch to weed edges that are in 2-3 feet of water. The fish are either just inside the weeds, or cruising along the outside edge waiting for a perch or gill to mess up and present themselves as a nice meal. I’m usually anchored up (spot lock) in 5-6 feet of water and casting up to 2ft and retrieving back. I’m wondering if I can “SEE” those fish in 2-3 foot up on that shelf. They tend to move along the edge and sometimes these are very long stretches, so it would be nice to locate a few, pick them off, and move along looking for more.

That’s spot on. If you’re already deploying something below the bottom of the boat…..

I sure don’t need any more “stuff” on the back of my boat. The main motor and the kicker get in the way enough trying to net big fish when trolling. Adding that big honkin’ pod on the non-kicker side would totally take away netting space. Maybe not a big deal for walleye trolling, but a huge deal when Salmon trolling Now if they had a way to make this thing removable, I could certainly take it off when Salmon fishing since it wouldn’t be used anyway, but I guess the point is why pay for the whole deployment system if you don’t need it.

X2 – they need to come up with an economical version for the Terrova. Those of us that drank the Kool-Aid last year and bought the side imaging units, iPilot Link Terrova with the prospects of adding the 360 Imaging are left out unless we want the big, expensive transom deployment system.

Since we were the early adaptors on the bundled package concept, you think they would have a solution. I plan to head to the Boat Show this week and look up the Johnson Outdoors guys.

    Eric,
Are you using the trolling motor 360 or rear deployment 360?

Also, would you consider them equal?
I loved the concept when it came out. But wanted it more for ice fishing than anything. Once it came out and was HUGE! It’s obviously not ice ready… and too big to mount on my boat transom.

The shallowest I have tried it was 8′. It had no issues marking fish and also marking weed edges. It is hard to see the fish that are inside the weeds though!

I was using the rear one as I have a terrova. I would say they were equal other than on the tm mounted one you have one small area that is blocked because of the trolling motor shaft.

From what I have heard and what I know about Johnson outdoors, I would give it less then a year and you will see one for the terrova. There is already a place to mount it just the matter of figuring out the logistics of how it will all work together.
I would venture to guess it wont be long though.

I never investigated the bow 360 till now, that looks like it could be easily adapted to ice fishing. I already have my 898csi on a genz box, and use the ice as well as the si transducer at times. Anyone have any reason why that wouldn’t work?

I would also thing a guy could make a braket to adapt to other trolling motors beyond what they currently offer.

You can easyly adapt the tm 360 to ice fishing. We just recently used a transom 360 and mounted it on a 4-wheeler and it worked well.

I see no reason you couldnt adapt a tm 360 to work on a terrova or something similar with a little time and tinkering. Just the matter if you have the time and means to do it. I dont think it would be that hard.
