Need opinions

Would like to hear opinions from you guys on a new sonar set up. I’ve made the call to go humminbird on my boat, once spring gets going I’m planning to make my purchases and get rolling, but in the mean time I’m trying to plan everything out and line up who/what/where so I can hit the ground running.
Where I want some opinions on is what unit to go with at the console. I already have a 788 that will be up by the TM, and my plan was to get the new 1199 for the helm. I really like large screens, but I had another thought and I now don’t know for if if thats the best way to go. My new thought was to jump down to the 999 but then also add a second ‘base’ at the console so when I’m doing something where I want say large screen side imaging and lake map (trolling perhaps), I can pull the 788 head and have it at the helm, full screen map and the 999 with full screen sonar. I like the idea of saving a very large chunk of money by jumping down one size, but I don’t want to be kicking myself 6 months down the road not getting a larger screen and I want this to be a one time purchase and I’m done (until one of the units dies anyway). What are your guys thoughts, pro or con either way? Is there anything with the larger unit that the smaller simply will not do to help justify not saving the money?

Then there is the 3rd option to, get the 1199 and still have another base at the helm for the 788, best of both worlds, but no budget saving there.

If you like running 2d and SI at the same time I would go for the 1199. Or pick up an 1198 if the prices have dropped enough to be more in line with your budget. They will still have updates coming for them! And I honestly don’t like to buy 1st year products because you tend to become the guinea pig for testing. I run a 998 and have no regrets because it was what I could afford without over extending my budget! and I moved my 797 to the bow to replace my vex. So it was a timely process but manageable $ wise.

I can’t help with the locator question. However whatever you get junk the Ram mount and buy a Johnny Ray mount.
You will never regret that, I promise.

Sorry for the hijack-Are the ram mounts bad? I have a 597 I run off my trolling motor that I’m going to also put a mount on the pontoon and wanted to use a Ram to move it so I can see it from the front as well.
    Thanks Brian-

I will have to look at those, when I made my budget I used RAM products to get my tally, but if I can make the set up better, I’m all for that.

I’ve got the budget for the 1199, but if I can save there are some other items that are ‘wants’ for the boat/trailer that I could use some of that savings to also get done and out of the way.

In my opinion, you will regret not getting the 11 series. As someone who owns a 788 2,997s and now an 1197 and a1198. It’s been an expensive journey getting to the two big screens. If you are intent on using Ram mounts, make sure they are the swing arm style and not the ball style, particularly for the 11.

While out running errands today I popped into the area Gander Mountain and as luck would have it they had a 900 and an 1100 side by side at the display models so I was able to sift through the different display modes and compare side by side. That made up my mind, 1100 it will be.
