Guys, I need some advice on a good lower priced Hummingbird. My current Lowrance is on its last legs, and with the boat just into storage, I’m gonna keep my eye open for deals the next few months. I’ll be “upgrading” to a Minnkota Powerdrive V2 soon (inheriting my father’s), which I think I could possibly pair with a Hummingbird, though that’s not critical at the moment. I fish primarily Pool 4 of the Mississippi out a 16-foot tiller. Mostly for walleye or crappie, so trolling and/or vertical jigging etc. I’d love the side scan stuff, but just can’t afford that. I’d like a unit that’s decent for marking fish and better yet, the ability to incorporate some at least basic GPS/waypoint information. Not sure what’s “realistic” when I say low priced, but in the $200 to $400 range would be great. Maybe up to $500, but that’s getting steep for me. Any suggestions?

Check out the deals Anglers HQ has right now
X2-A 788 with a chip for $449
November 21, 2013 at 8:39 am #1365447Thanks, guys. I don’t know much about the different models and what’s considered a “good” price, but if you’re saying the 788 is both a good model and $450 is a decent price, I’ll check it out.
November 21, 2013 at 9:07 am #1365453From what you have said I would venture to guess you would be very happy with a 700 series humminbird.
With that said I am out of the 788ci HD’s but do have 1 788ci HD DI combo left. I will still include the map chip with the purchase of that unit.
You will probably see a lot of lower prices or blow out prices on a lot of those units as humminbird has new stuff coming out near the first of the year.
November 21, 2013 at 9:30 am #1365459I am kinda in the same situation as you, just lurking right now, watching sales etc.
One thing, watch EBay, once in a while something really goes on the cheap side there.
I am kinda getting cold feet on the SI, seems that keeping the “Ducer at the right angle seeems to cause problems.
This stuff is supposed to be useful and fun, not to have worries and problems keeping it tuned in.
Just my thinking on it.I too am watching the thoughts and ideas from those in the KNOW about this electronics.

Not sure how “essential” it is for me to look for something with GPS/a chip. But it’s sure be fun to have.
Again, I appreciate all the info.

I don’t know what you heard, but from personal experience,
I mounted the transducer
lowered it once
angled it once,
and haven’t had any issues in two years of operation.
and this is without using a second high speed transducer
IMHO: SI is the only way to goNovember 21, 2013 at 5:52 pm #1365614Quote:

Those prices are actually insanely low. That is a screaming deal, not just a decent deal. Enjoy.

Like posted above. Not sure where you are getting that info. SI and DI require a small learning curve that is VERY worth it. As far as the transducer. Get it set properly from the get go and forget it.
