I just bought a 597 and not sure if I have this setup right or not. I’ve got the factory defaults and today was getting a picture like this.

On the 200khz lots and lots of stuff on the screen (switchfire set to clear mode, sensitivity is 10) and hardly anything on the 455khz view.

I know the river is high and dirty right now, not sure if this is normal or not. On the DI view (455khz) I seem to be able to get decent readings of sunken trees and what not, I think I have this mounted correctly.

Looks fine to me. In that shallow of water, on a river, there will tend to be a lot of debri that will cause false fish echos and clutter up the screen. Different depths will require different sensitivity settings. On my 797 in shallower water I turn the gain down a little (7-8). In 20+ fow I will have it set at 12-13 and as much as 15. I like to run it just high enough so the little dots similar to the left of the screen capture just disappear.

That is it exactly. I have same unit and in December when the flow was nill the screen would be crystal clear, and now, very much like yours. Its a great unit enjoy!

When running my Hird 90% of the time I have my sensitivity up so I can adjust as bottom changes, or depth.

Thanks, nothing like getting confirmation from someone with exactly the same finder.

I’ll try cranking the sensitivity down a bit next weekend. This finder is much better than anything I’ve ever owned (and does about 600x as much). Upgraded from a Piranhamax 160 which is a kids toy compared to this thing.

On another note has anyone used the Navionics SonarCharts? I fish pool 6 and 7 a lot which aren’t mapped real good….supposedly you can upload your own sonar recordings and they update their charts with ’em. Would be great to get better maps of the area.
