DI verses Structure Scan

Is HB DI as good as Lowrance structure scan or is it something different entirely? I’m planning to buy an HB858 HD DI mainly because of I-Link but have heard great reports on the Gen2 with structure scan for target separation and real life view. Has anyone seen both in operation and have an opinion?

    Since nobody else is answering…

DI is down imaging only, directly under the boat and Structure Scan will do both under and out to the sides (Humminbird’s version of StructureScan is Sidescan).

Both manufacturers make both types and it’s a Ford/Chevy argument as far as I’m concerned. I’ve owned both and would not feel at a disadvantage with either.

There are many small differences that could make you want one versus the other, for me personally, I liked the fact that Lowrance is best suited for my custom made DrDepth maps, I personally think Lowrance has a cleaner image, and I like the StructureMap feature.

If I were a walleye guy, which I’m not, you would find a Humminbird on my boat hooked up to the newest Minnkota iPilot and a Lakemaster map and I would be trolling the contours like crazy.

If I were rich I might buy Humminbird’s 360 imaging and probably never use it.

Anyway, if you want more detailed opinions from me , PM me and we can talk on the phone, too much detail to write about…

Does anyone use a humminbird SI on the front of their boat?

A buddy of mine does and he’s a bass guy.

Traditionally you want your SI to be pretty steady with turns so the trolling motor isn’t a great option for Bass guys who are turning their trolling motor constantly for boat position. Where as for a walleye guy pulling rigs in a relatively straight line, it works fine.

My buddy uses his to locate structure he’s fishing on the fly as he’s fishing it. One example how he uses it is he will be deep cranking a hard spot in open water and will use the SI to locate the hard spot as he’s working it.
