I am looking into upgrades and was wondering if down imaging or side imaging would be the best for River walleye fishing.

Side gets more use in my boat on the river.I do use down to check out bait fish and structure quite often.I like having both.

If you have the cash get a unit with both. Its nicer to have it and not use it often, than wish you had it. I use my side quite often once I learned how to see fish on it!

You may want to purchase Dr. Sonars DVD on Lowrances Structure Scan. He goes into great detail on this. I know it’s Lowrance but same principles.

Big question is how will you be fishing?
Then, what would I like to see when doing that.

When on the move I use the split screen with DI and SI
Then when spot locked ( electronic anchored )
I use either split screen with DI, SI,
    or just the DI

How do you know if one of these systems has both. I see there are modles like 1157c combo, 1158c DI combo, 1158cx XD combo, 1197 c SI Combo. HD XD Combo.

All HB units with the SI designation will also have down imaging if the software is up to date. I’m not familiar with lowrance.

I only have bird DI and all I will add is if you can afford it get the SI. DI works great for me on the river but would love to have the SI, but just wasn’t in the budget.

Works great for finding the edges!
