Just updated the 798 to the newest update. The new version rendered the unit useless as an ice fishing unit. Update said “Removed Universal Sonar ll transducer selection option, now users should select dual beam as their selection. I took that to mean the Universal was replaced with a renamed function. Apparently not so. If you ice fish with one, don’t update! Anyone know how I can undo this!?

Try giving Humminbird customer Service a call. Customer Service They should be able to answer your question. Please let us know what they tell you.

Looks like their phones are down. You might try emailing them.

    Hi,
If you want to back out of an update on your 798ci (798ciHD or whatever model HB you might have) you can find it on the “side image soft” website. Below is the link:

    http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/

The files are located on the “Downloads” then “Humminbird Firmware/Software Updates” path. You will have to become a member of the forum (no big deal) to access these files.

The rule is that you NEVER install a level of software older than what came with the unit originally. HB will tell you very BAD THINGS will happen.

Just curious … I thought the reason they changed the notation from Universal 2 to Dual Beam in the transducer selection menu was to eliminate confusion??? Either selection will select a 2D transducer (bow mount US2 or an Ice Ducer (in your case). What are you seeing on your unit?

    Take care,
    Roger

The problem is that there is only two options for transducer now. I now have a choice of Compact Sidescan or Quad beam. There is no dual beam or the original Universal Sonar ll option in the transducer menu. I was also wondering how the US2 would work on the trolling motor with this option gone.
I do have the last update saved on my computer. I just don’t know if I can put the old version back into the unit.

You can reinstall your previous version, in the same manner you update.. Just make sure you dont have two files on the card and restore defaults before updating.

Reverted back to V. 6.250 and all is better. It would appear that others are having “less than satisfied” feelings about this update. I haven’t received final word as to what caused the problem (operator or software), but if you plan on updating, make sure you have a copy of the previous version on hand. I’ll post back with updates as I get them.

Besides resetting the unit back to factory it is a very good idea to download your waypoints on to a SD card and clear the unit of waypoints. Many have locked up there unit do to a corrupted waypoint. Run your waypoints thru Humveiwer it will detect any corrupted way points before installing them back onto the unit. May save your Hbird a trip back to the factory, and some jingle.
