Humminbird 788 DI problem

I have a 788 DI. The sonar works ok but when going across the lake, the map will never keep up. I have all the new updates and still have the problem. I mounted it on my ATV for using it as a GPS with a lakemaster chip and have the same problem if I go faster than about 12 mph.

According to Humminbird customer service there is just so much information on a lakemaster chip the unit can’t keep up. They recommended getting a Navionics chip and trying that. I told them as long as I am at it maybe I should try a new Lowrance and see if it can read the chip I already have. For the cost of the chips I really hate just buying them to see if it will work or not.

The part that really gets me is that I started out with a 597. They told me the cause of that one not keeping up was because the microprocessor in the 597 wasn’t fast enough (sounds pretty good eh?) I was told the 788 was a totally different animal.

I like the unit but am disappointed with what I outlined. Has anyone else had this problem or am I the lone man on the proverbial raft?

Frankly I have had enough talking to the customer service people. The are friendly and always answer the phone, but basically they follow a canned script and it gets to the point you feel you are dealing with profesional tongue wrestlers.

I have found help and answers at the website Humminbird Side Imaging Forums.

Website is not actually associated with hbird in any way but there are a few techs that are members who are very helpful!

As far as the problem with the unit, I have heard about many issues with this. The best solution is to zoom out while traveling, and then zoom in for better detail once you get to your fishing area. The 700 series is at a disadvantage because of its screen size. I believe the 800, 900, and 1100 are much better at handling all the data and were actually designed to run lakemaster better.

My 997 is unusable using the Humminbird Lakemaster v1 at just about any speed unless almost completely zoomed out. I had a 798 (non-HD) that was better, but was still problematic for viewing structure in detail while moving.

Which version of the map chips are you trying? I wonder if newer chips have the data packaged for more effective display? I know the Lakemaster folks I spoke with suggested the data for Hbird was a kluge job and needed serious work to match the display speed of the Lowrance units when the purchase was made.

I use my HDS5 on the ice for this reason, it displays the maps at any detail and scrolls fine.

Had the same issue with mine. Seems like after the upgrades it wasnt as bad. Either that or maybe I just got used to it running that way. Like mentioned above zooming out should help. Mine zoomed out to 100′ running the boat at 30mph seems to work pretty well.

Thought I read somewhere that a external antenna would help with this to.

What will also help is use North up instead of course up. With course up every time a turn is made the screen has to refresh way to many times. The newer ma[ chips have way more information then the old ones. When I had my 797c2SI I was running 2006 Navionics and the unit never had a problem with keeping. My new Lakemaster really bogged it down. [

As much as I dont like North up, this info is correct. 997s and 1197s dont have the processor speed to keep up with the information on the card..perticularly, if youre zoomed in .
