Shallow Depth Reading Problem

    Hey Gang,

I have noticed recently that when I get in shallow water, often the break point is somewhere around 12 feet, that my HB 1197 and 898 both read double or triple the actual depth. I am running version 6.18 on both units and have them networked together with an SI and transom mount high speed transducer both hooked to the 1197. Anyone else have a similar issue and find a solution? HB support recommended increasing my max allowable depth and sensitivity, neither of which made sense to me….

Is the transducer popping up from the release on the bracket? That is the only time I get an error.

No issues with transducers and everything works fine when I slide out to deeper water, i.e. usually around 12 feet.

Does is “bounce” back and forth?? correct reading, triple, back to correct, back to triple?

Can’t find it, but I want to say I read something about this and one of the “fixes” was to adjust the surface clutter or noise filter settings. Not sure up or down / more or less…..might be worth a try. good luck.

IF so it’s because the two interfere with each other especial on shallow hard bottom. I turned my 958 sonar of and the 1198 then worked fine.

i run into that occasionally in shallow water, especially when the bottom is pretty hard. i assume it’s the signal bouncing back so quickly that the unit is misreading it. on the screen i see two “bottoms” displayed – one at the actual depth and another that’s usally twice the actual depth.

as mentioned already if you play with your sensitivity settings (turn them down) you should be able to get it to read properly. since you’re in so shallow anyway you probably won’t miss the reduced detail.

Change your “MAX DEPTH” setting to 150″ or 50 feet more than any water you will ever encounter..

    Default is 1500 feet..

I found that by adjusting my surface clutter setting from 1 to 3 the problem went away….
