Been having the same issue of driving ahead of screen loading to update the GPS mapping. appears to happen in all views whether I’m zoomed out to 1-2 mile or zoomed into 500ft. Is this the unit or do I have the setting set-up wrong

It depeds on which unit you are running. If you are running lakemaster chips they tend to load slower than navionics on the older units.

I am running a 788ci HD DI combo that is about a year old and noticed this last weekend that my chip was loading real slow also. I run Lakemaster, but have never had a problem until this last weekend. Hadn’t used it much since the last update and was wondering if that update had something to do with it. I even have the external GPS antenna.

We run Navionics on our boat and i will never go to Lakemaster. That chip is amazing and very accurate, loads very fast.

The newer units have faster processors so that ios not an issue. Lakemaster makes such a fine chip that it contains a ton of information….hence the requirements for a faster processor that what is in some of the previous versions. Mine is a few years old and is slow to load thd maps, too. My old black and white Garmin always loads superfast, but then, it is black and white so you dont get those cool color gradients that are so helpful on complex pieces of structure. The slow load time would be more of a problem if i used the unit for navigation by the console, but mine is up front and i only use it to work the structure after ive pulled up on it.

this happened to me on my previous 1197/997 units. to work around it i would just turn off the contour lines when running the boat at high speed. the color zones are still present so you can avoid the rock piles and other shallow areas, but without all the 1′ contour lines it will load and scroll much faster. once you reach the fishing spot, just turn the contours back on for detail of the area you want to fish.

it “shouldn’t” happen on the newer 1198/998 units with the faster processors. if this is happening on one of those, you might want to call Humminbird customer service directly.

What helps those units load faster is put North up not course up makes a big difference the screen does not need to refresh as often.
