597 Shutting off when the engine starts

Guys, I put a new 597 ci HD with down imaging on my boat last summer. I like the unit so far, the gps is not quite as accurate as the one with an external GPS on my last boat but otherwise it has been great. When I start my boat (50 horse 2 stroke) some times it seems to cross up the graph, for instance I start the boat up quick and look at the graph and it is stuck on and will do nothing. I then have to actually unplug the unit to reset it. It only happens some of the time and never happens besides when I start the motor. I am assuming this is because I am running out of power to run the unit sometimes when I start the boat? Could it be because my battery is weak (does not seem to be weak but I guess you never know). I am not sure what I should do, as I think I have everything setup the same way I have on past boats.

    Good luck out there everyone.

I have heard of big motors messing up graphs, but never shutting off or freezing to the point it wont work. I would also say your battery is weak. Is it a starting battery or dual purpose? Have you had it load tested lately? You can take it to most auto parts stores and they will test it for free. I know autozone does, that is who I usually use.

It is the starting battery, I will bring it in tomorrow and get it checked out. What’s weird is the battery seems to hold a charge very well but we will see what comes out of it.

How old is the battery? They lose there cranking amps over time and your voltage will dip to far for sensitive electronics. Get a new one and if there us room you may want to upsize it.

HBs are very sensitive to voltage drop and tend to freeze up or power down.

    Battery.
What are your charging habits, and how large is your charger for the starting battery?
    Battery age?

Try the connections, My Lowrance powered off every time I started my motor. Found about 6 connections from my battery to the unit and 2 were not crimped tight. They jumped from the main power switch to a ACC switch to my 12volt outlets then to my graph.

fwiw my take on a battery test….
Pass, means little, fail means it needs to be replaced. I’ve had batteries test out fine, but they were still had a needed replacement.

I only have one connection from the battery to the unit, I am planning on taking it in tomorrow to see what it tests out as. It looks like the battery is fairly old (I bought the boat last year) so I may just replace regardless. I will post back on what comes of it.

My unit did the same thing. In my case it was the battery. Good luck!

I had the same thing happen to me on an 898. Motor battery was brand new. Never did figure out why it was happening. I wound up hooking up smaller 12v battery that fits nicely with my trolling motor batteries. This is the kind you’d put in a scooter or 4 wheeler. It seems to work well so far.
