Down Imaging or Side Imaging for trolling motor

Any reasons to go with SI over DI when it will be mounted on the trolling motor? My understanding is that images are different depending on the transducer. Supposedly the DI transducer gives clearer images for Down Imaging.

I could see where SI would have an advantage when trying to stay off the weed line while casting for muskies.

Down Imaging works better for trolling motor but is not meant to be used on trolling motor . SI works at 2 to 4 mph with stationary transducer. They do not work at slow speeds with moving transducer at all. They are designed to quickly scan an area then you make waypoints on structure or points of interest then you go back with gps and standard sonar to fish.

I wouldn’t install on a trolling motor that you will be turning quite a bit. It’s meant to be install on the boat and used while going straight for best results.

I currently have a 798 ci hd si I have been using various forms of HB SI and wideside on the “front” for years. If you drop the trolling motor but use the gas engine to steer, it keeps a clean image and detects the fish before you get to them. I also use the SI and sweep the trolling motor when anchored to get “360” image. These are just a couple of the uses for SI up front. With DI, you just get the early detection.
The DI on the SI units is greatly enhanced by using the HDSI transducer. It has longer elements in the transducer.

If you need a perfect picture on the screen, then stay away from SI on the troller. If youre good at reading what your unit is whispering to you, then a trolling motor application will pay dividends.

I will never…. ever.. be without SI on the trolling motor again..

Thanks everyone. It appears that my best bet is to go with Down Imaging. Have to look at the options at the Musky expo today.
