External Antenna Mounting

I will be mounting an external antenna for my 788ci HD DI combo. The cord is about 20′ long. I need about 1′ of it. Can I just coil it and stuff it under the side rail, or should I run it up one side of the boat and back again? Does it matter for performance reasons?

Did you buy the unit with a external antenna? Thought I read somewhere that this was humminbirds fix to issues with the internal antenna.

Yup, just wind it up into a coil and stuff it out of the way. Don’t wind it into a coil smaller than 6-8 inch diameter. There’s a limit to how much you can bend the cable before it kinks.

I’ll be interested in hearing how your unit works with an external antenna. I have the same unit without the DI, and it seems to find satellites quickly even in the garage.

Yeah, this was HB’s answer to fixing speed reading issues. I was having speed readings of 0 to 5 mph just sitting on my trailer. This fixes that. Hooked up the external and it reads 0 mph as it should.

I argued with them for about 3 phone calls and they finally sent it for free.
