SI transducer wire inside Terrova shaft?

has anyone tapped into the shaft of their Terrova to run the Side Imaging wires inside? i hate having the wire flapping and it’s also getting pinched in the mount occasionally when
racking the trolling motor after use.

can i feed it through the shaft?
if so, how did you do it?

I have done that on a basic transducer,But I DO NOT recommend it on a SI Transducer wire.

The only way to do it,is to cut and splice the T-wire because of the T-wire ends and that T-wire you DONT want cut and splice.

Don’t claim to be and Xpert, but it don’t seem to be a good idea. My Terrova is buried at the moment, but I seem to remember that there is an indent the length of the shaft that might be deep enough to handle the cable. The problem would be to get it above the choke collar – might have to remove the head and collar – slip it through and re-install the collar and head. I have Lowrance down/side and the cable is pretty heavy – mine is on the stern and goes through the box to both hds units. Don’t know much about bird stuff.

yes, i’ve got my units networked as well so i can display SI images anywhere.

i’ve got SI transducers on the transom and on the bow mount trolling motor because there are times when having it 20′ further up makes a difference in boat handling, such as when casting or trolling real tight to structure.

that wire’s both annoying when it flaps and i’m worried about slicing it in the bracket…does anyone have any other suggested solutions?

I don’t see having a SI transducer on a trolling motor that useful. At least the way I run the motor. Every turn, the varying speed, ect. It would seem to me that the TM would be to “touchy” to get a quality SI reading. But I have never tried it either, so I could be totally wrong.

Question: Are you using the TM simply as a mounting point then trolling with a kicker or big motor? I can see the advantages of getting the “information” 20 feet sooner.

I tried to make my cable go inside the shaft of my Terrova. I was going to fabricate and drill a delrin insert to replace the US2. After trying for a hour or so to get the US2 out, I decided that it wasnt going to be as easy as I had hoped, and I really didnt want to risk water intrusion into the trolling motor.

What I ended up doing, is threading the cable up the slot in the Terrova shaft. It took about 45 minutes to take the Terrova head off and thread the cable and put everything back together.

You can see how I did it in pictures 123- 131 here.

FWIW, The HDS cable has too large of a diameter to do this

    Thanks, REDDOG
awesome, your pictures and success give me the confidence to rip into a brand new terrova.

Theres very little ripping into involved. You take the cover off first, this gives you access to the thru bolt that mounts the head to the shaft. Remove the shaft assembly from the drive mechanism. Thread the cable thru the drive hole and put it back together.

You can still twist the cable off, if you dont keep track of the revolutions on the head, but this keeps it captured and out of harms way.

Thanks for signing the guestbook! I appreciate it!

it’s quite useful when working a weedline where i want to remain a certain distance away (such as 1/2 cast off the edge). for example i’ll set the range to 90′ and keep the weedline in the middle of the image so it’s 45′ from my boat. if it starts to creep towards me i can push the boat further out before i’m right in the weeds, or if it starts moving away from me i can adjust to maintain good casting distance.
with this technique i’m not particularly worried about the quality of the images…i just need enough information to know when to slide out or slide tighter. works great, especially in dirty water where i don’t “crash” into the weedbeds anymore.

absolutely. i drop the trolling motor in the water just far enough to get a good reading, put the display up on my rear display and run the big motor. it gives me the info i need sooner, especially when contour/structure trolling at 4-5mph. i also find i get “cleaner” images due to less water noise and other interference that exists on the transom.

awesome! something like this is exactly what i’m looking to do. i hope Johnson Outdoors sends you some free stuff! i love my Terrova and Humminbirds, and you just upped that another notch by resolving my one irritation.

    color me happy!

just completed doing this to my setup. took about an hour, but that’s just because i was easily distracted by my beer. easy to do and cleaned everything up in just the way i was hoping for.

    thanks again.

It looks like there is a new version of
    HUMMINBIRD XHS-9-HDSI-180T T/M TRANSDUCER

It is supposed to be more stable in location.

But my question is it looks shorter and I was wondering if it performs as well regarding the returns?
