I have the 788 and was looking at buying the portable soft pack to use it as a GPS while out ice fishing or going in someone else’s boat. If I rig this up is there anyway for me to study the lakemaps(I have navionics & lakemaster) in my house while my unit doesn’t have satellite reception. I’ve noticed that when the boat is in the garage a map will not appear on the nav screen if it doesn’t have a position lock. Thanks.

When you power the unit on, first you will get a screen that says “loading”:

The next sceen, (which stays up for about 5 seconds) has an option at the bottom that says “Press Menu for Startup Options”

Press menu while that screen is up.

this will take you to a screen that has 4 options 1) Normal

    2) Simulator, 3) System Status and 4) PC connect.

    Select Simulator

    Press exit to continue

then press views (4 times i think)till you get to the full gps screen.

This should have you somewhere on the tip of Florida.

Use the 4way cursor to move the crosshairs up to your mapping area, and if you have a mapping chip in, you should see alot of little boxes on your screen at this zoom level.

Zoom in and move the cursor till you get over your target lake, and then zoom in to the desired level to see the detail on the mapping chip.

    Enjoy!

All models of Humminbirds require the same keystrokes to do this.

System status will take you to your Serial number, Model, software version, voltage and the hours on your machine.

Pressing view once, while in System stauts will show you all accessories, connected and unconnected.

You cannot get back to a regular screen from the system status menu, without powering the unit off and bringing it back up

Just remember that waypoints or any settings made in simulator mode are not kept by the unit. Those have to be made in normal mode.

See, that’s what I’m talking about! I want to be able to view a map that is not in simulator so I can waypoint underwater structure that I want to fish on forthcoming trips.

My units lock on in the garage all the time. It just takes a while longer..

What are you going to use for a gps antenna when you are ice fishing? It sounds to me like you either need to get a second puck, or make the one in your boat, removeable.

You will need an ice ducer also anyway.
