Here is some video of the issue I am having with my 1198.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqCQyYpmHtE
This unit was purchased new and sent to Ranger to install. I have the SI mounted and a shot through hull transducer of the high speed pickup. Again everything was installed at Ranger. I have verified the following…
Checked all accessories and cables for nicks, cuts, or physical damage and found none

Unpluged the transducer and all other accessories, except for the power cable, going to the fishfinder. The depth sounder operates properly, and then I reconnect the transducer and accessories one by one but was unable to reproduce the issue.

Checked for proper voltage to your depth sounder at the connection to the battery/fuse panel.
To ensure that I am getting the proper voltage to the fishfinder. I also verified voltage with all electrical equipment running as well as with the main motor and/or trolling motor running at different speeds and verified proper amperage. I had no over-voltage, under-voltage or electrical interference.

I also checked for electrical interference
Checked depth sounder with the boat sitting still, with all electrical equipment and motor(s) off. To eliminate any possible source of interference. This verified no electrical interference the boat equipment.
Eliminated all accessories by turning each piece of equipment back on individually and was unable to find any interference.
I even went as far to create an in-line fuse, connecting the 1198 directly to the battery. To eliminate faulty electrical connections and electrical interference, which may have caused a problem but still had the issue.
Verified boat’s grounding system to ensure it was not operating on a “floating ground”.

Let me know if you have seen the same issue and if/how you were able to remedy.

    Thank you,

    Hi,
My guess is that your depth issue with the 1198c 2D is being caused by (2D) interference from the “other” unit you have running (800 or 900 series unit?). Are both units running the same 2D frequency (83k, 200k, or 83/200k)? Are the transducers for both units mounted near each other? How does the 1198c run w/ no other units running? (I would assume you have tried this but just a question).

As far as the SI/DI display on the 1198c locking up, that may be a symptom of the unit not having a “good” bottom depth reading. ALL HB units w/ SI/DI capability derive their (SI/DI) depth value by using the 2D reading from the transducer connected to the head. Since your 1198c 2D reading is not correct, what you see on your SI/DI screen might be the result. The level of software in your 1198c might also be part of this freeze symptom. The latest software release level for the 1198c is 5.700.

    Good luck,
    Roger

I should also mention that it only happens in sallow water, but I can run sallow for 30 to 40 minutes and the it goes crazy for 5, 10,15, 20 minutes. Power cycling the unit during the behavior doesn’t always help. Also hard bottom rocks seems to be the trigger but the fact that it caurnun fine and behave this way is very troublesome and difficult to diagnos.

I suggest that you go to http://www.bassboatcentral to post this same message. You will have to join/log in as a new user but no big deal. East to do. On the home page click on BBC Boards on the left then Humminbird Sonar/GPS on the menu after that.

There are some absolute “aces” on that board when it comes to SI. I would make a good bet that someone on there can help you out in no time flat.

Plus, the other Humminbird SI info is really cool.

There is a yahoo group that a couple of guys from humminbird frequent all the time. It says it is a Side Imaging group, but the will answer any questions. They reply to questions everyday. You will have to create a yahoo account.

Actually, I found this on the humminbird forum site. It is a super useful link provided by one of the other members. This describes your situation perfectly and provides a fix.

    Thx drew,
Next steps will be the Y connector and the SI ducer because it is only happening at shallow hard bottoms. I won’t have time this week but will look at it next. Testing will be the issue as the water will be hard.

Drew and TJB, Roger that posted above is one of the very good sources to help you with your “Bird”. I believe he is on the yahoo site as well, but not sure. I’ve seen him on a couple others and one that mirrors the yahoo site.
Talk with Roger, he should be very good help.
    Good luck
