Screen Lock issues

both a friend and i have had the same issue this year with 4 different units (858, 998, 1198, 1198)…the screen locks up randomly while running.

this happens when the unit is on and working, not when hitting buttons/changing views or anything.

i updated to 5.7 and it continues to happen occasionally.

when running LotW following a GPS track, we both experienced a freeze-up that put us at risk of hitting rock hazards!

anyone else experiencing this? known fixes?

    Hi,
Humminbirds are (by looking at various chat boards over a long time) very sensitive to low input voltage. If the input voltage is low you will see screen freezeā€™s at either engine startup time (if connected to starting battery and battery is low (weak?)) or a voltage drop thru some connection in the boat wiring system. You can check your input voltage at the head (where it counts!) by looking at your unit(s) Self Test screen (IE. hit power button, at menu prompt time >> hit menu button, select Self Test screen >> actual unit input voltage (I’ve been told) is about 0.1v less than the value displayed). Based on what you see for that input voltage will determine what you do next.

    Good luck ,
    Roger

i’ll check the connections, that’s always a good first step. good reminder.

that said, i’m relatively confident the voltage is good…since this is occurring on similar units/same software on more than one boat while the boats are running or trolling where available voltage wouldn’t be taxed, such as it would be when starting the main motor.

i’ve heard some references to screen freeze being an issue with ethernet networked units (which these are). has anyone experienced that?

    Hi,
The Ethernet feature has been a work in progress since it was announced for the 2011 boxes (?). I believe the latest “story” is that all boxes in the network have to have a software (firmware) level of 5.5xx and up to “work” properly. I don’t know if you have looked at the manual for the Ethernet feature >> if you haven’t, Rev A is available from the Humminbird website.

As a sidebar, here is a link to Rev B of that manual which I found on one of the chat boards that I monitor:

    Good luck ,

i follow that forum as well, i haven’t seen anything posted there specific to this experience however. i’ll probably ask the question over there too or just write to Humminbird direct if/when i get some time.

i can’t believe we’re the only ones who are experiencing this when BOTH boats i’ve personally been in with new units networked over the ethernet have the same exact issue. do you have these units on a similar network?

i’d hoped that when i updated from 5.5xx to 5.7 it would resolve the freeze-up issue. unfortunately it did not.

it has only occurred when both units are on and networked, it has not happened when only one unit is on. i’m not sure if that’s causal or just a random correlation however.

the problem is that when you’re running 40mph, by the time you notice the map isn’t moving you’re potentially in a dangerous situation

Didio to what Roger said. I had the same issue with a 997 and related it back to low voltage. I ended up cleaning all my terminals along with installing new terminals and the problem went away. Hope that helps you are not the only seeing this.

I have the exact issue with linked units….only my bow unit (788di) locks up, the 998 doesn’t.
