I doubt this is a HB issue…more of a power issue. I am hooked up to the cranking (starter) battery.
Bad battery? Any ideas?

I doubt this is a HB issue…more of a power issue. I am hooked up to the cranking (starter) battery.
Bad battery? Any ideas?
Shuts down and stays shut down? Or just shuts down when you crank the motor?

Is it safe to assume the HB will turn back on after you’re done using the trim? If that’s the case it sounds like a voltage drop when you’re using the trim. Either you have a battery on the way out OR you’ll need a bigger 12 volt to run both simulataneously.
Here’s the whole picture:
Fishing without main motor on (90 hp Merc tiller on Warrior 1890)and the HB 798 is flawless.
Turn on the 90 Merc and the HB screen turns white or has lines on it…it quits.
Flick the main accessory power switch (big motor still running) and I can restart the HB…both big motor and HB are now running perfectly.
Why the HB quits when I turn on the big motor…no idea.

Is the hb wired direct to battery or through fuse/accesory block?
What does the hb read for voltage before you hit the switch?

Mine does the same thing. Yamaha F115. The HB freezes and I have to cut the power to it to be able to restart it. I am running the exact same everything as last year and never had this issue. I’m assuming my main battery is getting weak however it’s a 4 or 5 year old Optima and reads 12+ volts all the time.
Also my lowrance restarts sometimes with the main motor starting however that does not freeze like HB, it just powers back on.
I developed the same issue in my 798 last year. The battery ring terminals were getting dirty and corroded and cleaning them fixed the problem. This year I plan on replacing all of the ring terminals on the starter battery to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
I have the same problem with my 115 Yamaha. As soon as the voltage gets too low my Lowrance will shut down when I start the Yamaha. I’m going to go to a series 29 Deep Cycle Interstate starting battery.
I had an HB 788ci doing the same thing to me last year. Putting a new battery in resolved the issue.
At the very least boys this seems to be a relatively common issue with a lot of anglers. If guys need a bigger battery to handle the electronics while the battery is under load no problem. I think we’ll all just get what we need. If however there is another solution perhaps in a different wiring option that would also be beneficial for guys to know. In no way am I suggesting this might be a solution, but I did install a seperate Starting battery on my New Skeeter WX2100 this spring. My initial thought was to be 100% sure I never burn the starting battery down to the point I can’t start my big motor. At times I will sit in one spot on I-Pilot which of course is run off my 36 volt system in the bow. However my pumps, electronics, radio and lights….are sitting on my starter. This season I talked with the SBC during the rigging process and had them install a second starting battery with a switch to isolate or run all together. It is my guess that this extra safety precaution might also eliminate this HB shutting down issue with a weakend battery.
I had the same issue. If your contacts are clean then I would guess the battery is weak. Mine would be fine in the morning because it was fully charged, but as the day went on with two radio’s, two locator’s, two livewell pumps, and other stuff draining the starting battery. When I would start the motor my 1197 would shut off. I also knew then that if I made a short move, and started fishing again for any amount of time the battery most likely wouldn’t have enough power to start the motor again. This was all cured by an AGM starting battery. Haven’t had an issue since.
If you sonar has the older spring loaded glass fuse holders, take them out and replace them with the blade style holders. The springs weaken and cause the voltage to the sonar unit to drop when starting the outboard.
We had this issue last year while fishing up near Aitkin. Took the boat into the FIRM and discovered it was a thin, black coat of corrosion in the threads of the battery posts. Barely visible, but apparently built up over the winter. After some scrubbing with a wire brush, and spraying with terminal protector, no more problems.
