    I have an 898 c SI.

I want to get a smaller version for ice fishing; actually predominately for use of GPS and waypoint viewing.

Having SI for several years, i have lots of screencaptures of lake/river bottoms (i.e. Fancy Waypoints)
I like to utilize these waypoints more in the winter than summer to drill holes Spot on the Spot.

    So here comes the question:

Do i need to buy an SI humminbird in order to view the SCREENCAPTURES from my 898cSI???

Obviously the first requirement is having two card slots, one for map and one for waypoints.
I don’t really want to buy an SI bird if it is smaller than an 800 series; so i’m looking for a color/gps/sonar HBird that can also view my screencaptures/waypoints from my 898cSI.

    Thanks for the help.

No, to view screen captures you do not need the second unit to be a SI unit. The unit is displaying a PNG (picture) file. I’ve coppied my SD cards over for a few friends and they worked fine

Does the screen captures coordinate with the waypoints? See that 598 in the classifieds, only has one slot, but if you get on the waypoint, then utilize the SI by spinning transducer might work out ??? Then could transfer to the boat come summer.

I guess in the end, all i’m trying to do is avoid removing the GPS puck from my boat in case i want to dunk that thing in the Mississippi sometime before ice out. I’ll probably put my 898 back on the Genz box and look into buying a second GPS puck for the Genz box.

I was viewing what’s available at Belas yesterday i see the 7Hundred series is obsolete, replaced with the 6Hundo series and the smallest size that comes with two card slots is 8Hundo series now. Kind of frowned on that; but so be it.

nhamm, yes – when you mark a waypoint, whatever is on your screen at the time you hit the Mark button is saved as a picture file with the same file name as they waypoint. When you put an SD Card into any HBird, your waypoints are automatically downloaded to the unit, but NO screencaptures transfer with them. Benefit of leaving the SD card in the unit is when you cursor over a waypoint, a small image of the screencapture shows up, and then you can open the screencapture and view it full screen.

Handy to have when you have to drill holes instead of quickly scan an area.

Fish blood, do you want to view the actual screen capture from your 898 on another unit? Or the waypoint associated with the screen capture. The actual screen capture is unit specific for viewing. I cannot take a screen capture with my 997 and pull the card and view it in my 1197.

    F Bomb!!
So, i went out and bought a 788 friday; put it on my genz box, added my ice duecer that i used on my 898, fired it up; put in lakemaster card, and waypoint card.

Not a single waypoint showed up. Dam. Confirmed both card slots work by moving the lakemaster card.

That really blows. I should have bought a 2nd external GPS puck and continued to use my 898 if my waypoints cannot be viewed from my new 788

You will be able to transfer waypoints from your 898 to a 788. Not sure if you didnt export them correctly to the card or what, but it can be done..

You dont need two card slots to do this, Waypoints are stored on the unit, not on the card. You transfer them to the card, insert the card in your new unit, and upload should be automatic into the 788. Exporting them to the card from your 898 is a little more difficult finding the export menu, but I think it is under waypoint management.

The waypoints without the screencaptures…Just doesn’t seem nearly as helpful.
I guess i have never “Exported” my waypoints from my 898. Though the card always resides in the unit unless i want to pull off a screencapture to post online or something…Never needed to “Export” to do that.

Talking to a guy at work, he also said that i could transfer my waypoints, but not screencaptures; through an ethernet connection.

You dont need a computer, or an ethernet connection to do this.

Saving all of your waypoints to a computer file, is smart to do, if they are important to you.

Waypoints are not stored on a SD card, only screencaptures. Waypoints are stored in the memory of the unit. If you want waypoints, you need to go to your waypoint management menu and export them to a blank SD card.

    Menu twice.
    Nav menu
Cursor down to “Waypoints, Routes and Tracks”
    Cursor to “Options” tab
Cursor to ” Select all and Export to SD card”
Select YES, when prompted to Confirm saving of Waypoints, routes and tracks to SD card.

You should get a message if it was,is succesful.

Then, you just insert the SD card into the 788 and power it on and follow the prompts.

You will not be able to view screencaptures that are on a sd card on the 788. You can only view them on the unit that you took them with.

You cannot even view them on a different 898. They are unit specific.

    Wow. That surprises me.

Thanks for your help. I’m going to consider whether i want my waypoints without screencaptures clutering up my 788 or if I should just say F’it and go fishing.

I have been starting each year with a new blank SD card anyway.

I kind of view waypoints as yesterdays fish, typically. Like you, I depend on SI to tell me where Im goign to fish today. ) I have a 1198 that is two years old, and has 8 actual waypoints on it. I have taken a bunch of screen captures with it, but delete the associated waypoint right away. Usually, it dont mean anything to me..
On my 1197, I have quite a few waypoints, but they are just for general reference to an area to start to look for fish with SI to determine where Im going to fish today.

im a F-it, just go fishing type of guy for the most part… )

I rarely use a waypoint in the summer, but the waypoint above is a good example of what I have used them in the past when I had my 898 on the genz box.

I intentionally include the chart with the si so when I’m standing on that position on ice, I can drill a set of holes that matches the structure and I can quickly and efficiently eliminate nice sections of structure… The chart and track provides the orientation of the si image.
Best you can do above the ice short of adapting the 360.

So, bottom compositions is generally what I use it for; and you know how important transitions can be as well as structure.

You can convert that S00071 screen capture into a transferable waypoint, with an edit in the menu. You will lose the screencapture associated with it, but if youre looking for a spot on a spot application like that, it can be done.

Maybe that will help you? If so, it needs to be done in your 898. You could rename the waypoint so you could recognize it.

I stand somewhat corrected via a text from Doug V.

898 screen capture can be viewed on another 898, but not a 998 or any other SI unit..

Good. That sounded insane that it was unit specific and not model specific.

You know, what might work would be if i buy the autochart pro.
I’ve scanned several areas this summer in preparation to buying the auto-pro. I believe i can get the bottom content with that, and that should be helpful. One of the areas is the Zumbro – which currently has horrible mapping, i’ve got every hole, nook and cranny recorded on my SI. Another area is a section of the cannon river.

I’m assuming that any autochart pro mapping created from data from my 898 would be viewable on my 788?

That I would believe to be true.

Ive heard differeing opinions n the AutoChart. Some liked it, some hated it and returned it. I thought hard about getting it, because I like to make my own maps on Dr Depth,(which I believe to be AutoChart now), but bought an ONIX 10 si instead, because it does all the mapping right on the unit.

    Havent tried it yet.

I’ve seen the ONIX and AUTOCHART PRO in use on the Red River… Pretty darn cool; Especially on a constantly changing river with no mapping
