Opening Day

Strong winds drove us into the back / sheltered bays on the Chip but the fish didn’t seem to mind. Fridays rain turned on the Northerns, Walleyes & Crappies yielding pretty good results for those of us that ventured out. Jigs tipped with minnows or Gulp worked best in between 12′ to 20′ . Water temps remained in the low to mid 50’s.

There was a fishing contest/tourney on our lake. Whoever heard of an opener contest? I hate them anyways. Especially on small lakes. They do nothing but larger than normal scale of damage to the fishery all so few people can boost their ego.

Was that the Crappie tournament sponsored by the Hall or a private one ? In any case I agree with you about opener tourneys. Too much traffic and pressure as it is without adding more.

Never did find out who sponsored. One of the constestants was telling my wife about it at our dock after we noticed the boat landing was packed. This near Spooner. I’m venting here because of low traffic. If I was to dis tourney’s in the more popular sections of this site I would get lambasted!!
Along the lines of fishing, I did not go. I fished suckers up there in weeks past but concentrated on getting my pontoon in then went quad riding on our free time. I plan to get cracking on fishing up there starting next weekend.

In general, if run correctly (catch & release etc.) tournaments are a good thing. They provide info for the DNR and promote friendly competition. I have run “Open” Bass tournaments and the DNR is VERY strict when it comes to the size of the water that can be fished, number of boats, number of tournaments allowed on specific lakes etc. But the “Opener” and Holidays are never a good time for them. Too much traffic and fishing pressure. I only fish a few tournaments each year and almost all of them are catch & release. Good luck to you this season.

    Tight Lines,

We will never agree on this subject. That’s ok.

Looks like a dam cold weekend coming. If the wind is still up I will probably not get out. Once I get past MN opening weekend I should be able to concentrate more effort on Wis. I have putting off LCO for years. I need to hook up with someone to give me a push.

Let me know when you plan to come over. I live about 3 miles from the new landing. Good lake but crowded on weekends.

Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind. I’ll be up there for some long weekends and a week in July.
