well do you work there, get there benifits???????? i dont support a business that has so many labor violations it has a seperate storage faculity to hold the files.
and i support all kinds of non union businesses. not one who bullies cities and suppliers.
Maybe no math skills and not the brightest bulb but she’s working and trying to contribute.
What do you know about this woman other than a chance encounter and then you bash her on an Internet forum.
Well said Matt!
As far as the math skills goes, she simply transposed the charge (64 cents) with the change required (36 cents). I’m an engineer and work with numbers all day. Upon reviewing my calcs, I sometimes find these little transpositions. Nothing to do with math skills whatsoever.
Of course, this doesn’t change the fact that the wrong item was entered in the first place.
Not taking anything personal just making a point as to dont personally judge somebody when you dont know their back story. Pretty simple. We were all taught that as young people and it’s what we teach our children
my wife has a tat, actually agreed to let her redo it. she wanted a tat with my name…….i said NO. personally i could care less, but when the tats cover your neck and face, thats extreme and quite frankly some piercings the same.
and i see i just got personally Judged based on my occupation. so be it dont care, and not by you.
closest thing to a peircing i had was a #4 rapala hook in my thumb back in july!!!!

My wife would give me a Black and Blue tattoo right between the eyes if I expected her to ask me for my approval.
I’m all with you on the Walmarts and Sams clubs of the world.
I had an interesting experience last week.
The FW needed 4 new tires on her car. Just after 4 I called the Woodbury Walmart Auto center and no one answered. I called the front desk and they transferred me back to the Auto Center. Just rang and rang.
Ok…guess they have help problems like everyone else.
I’ll call Fleet Farm in Hudson. A fella in automotive answered the phone. Great! I picked out the tires I wanted and asked if I could have them installed on Saturday. Well it seems that this wasn’t the Service Center and I would have to talk to someone there. The message on the answering machine clearly stated they were open to 7 pm weekdays. I could not get an answer and when I talked to the front desk, they said the person at the service desk went home at 4 pm. (sigh)
The next day I noticed that I could make an appointment on line at FF. Did that for Saturday that was 3 days later. Email said they would contact me to confirm with in 24 hours. Didn’t happen. Had the FW call to confirm and they said the earliest we could get in was in December sometime.
At this point I’ve spent 3 hours trying to buy tires with nothing to show for it. Called Car X in Hudson and got it done.
With unemployment down and wages up, we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg. Tried to schedule an appointment at the doctor lately? I know of one person that made an appointment two weeks ago for a few days before Christmas. They are booked that far.
I just can’t imagine not driving to a store picking out the tires and having everything done at one time. Of course I buy local and not some mega store. I suppose being known helps but then maybe i’m paying $2 a tire more for that service? I dunno.
If it weren’t for the union, alot of these older guys would be working at Walmart
I buy local too…and there wasn’t anyone there when I could go…after 4.
I was looking at the tires on-line.
On another note, the FW took my truck to Markquart Motors on Monday. I bought 4 new tires sight unseen because I trust them. Guess that’s not local but when the FW comes back and says “they are so nice there”, (she never says that) I’ll continue to support those people. Even though it’s over an hour away.
At this point I’ve spent 3 hours trying to buy tires with nothing to show for it.
Got tires for my Pickup last night a Discount in Inver Grove. Ordered them online on Saturday morning. Store employee called me about 2 hours later and explained a few things to me and asked a couple more questions about my pickup to ensure they had everything for my appointment I scheduled for the coming Tuesday. Showed up last night at 4:45, paid the sales guy and I was out of there by 5:10 with a brand spankin’ new set of 33″ tires. Couldn’t be happier and the folks there are outstanding.

Nice generalization about how the world is today and lamenting the good old days. Next time you should try and speak to this woman…maybe offer help and all of your worldly experience versus outing her on the internet.
Totally agree. First off, at least she’s out there WORKING. Secondly, who knows what her story is? How she looks may well be a product of more than just fasion decisions.
In addition, anyone who’s out there pointing out faults of service employees is just revealing their amateur status as far as knowing anything about who’s even out there to hire for these positions in the first place. She very probably was the best applicant that applied that week if not that whole month! Setting aside the college kids who come and go, it is very, very difficult to get ANY applicants for service positions. Even at $15 or more an hour, good luck to you.
Finally, oh the bitter irony. Someone shops somewhere for the low-low prices and then complains about the low-low level and quality of the service and employees. Even a poorly-educated guy like me with just a couple of BSc degrees on my lowly curriculum vitae didn’t miss that one. It’s a wonder so many others did.

And we wonder why self check-out lanes are being forced on us?
And we wonder why self check-out lanes are being forced on us?
I did that once. The guy running it was an idiot.
And we wonder why self check-out lanes are being forced on us?
I’m not old enough to really remember not pumping my own gas.. but back in 1960 did anyone pump their own gas?
Personally I cannot wait until all cashier lanes are gone. I don’t care if I have 50 items, I’m strolling through the self check out to avoid idiots to do it for me.
Who,s charged with the responsibility that their employee,s know how to do their job ? From what i have seen of late new employee,s being trained by someone who was hired a week ago! This was and is happening in a paper mill i was employed at for 41 years.

Ditto- and the ensuing argument was quite humorous, then the wife chimes in and says, “the guy is lost.”

My job back then was pumping gas for others, checking their oil, cleaning the windows, filling the windshield washer fluid. There was maybe up to 10 of us kids pumping gas. It taught us to be on time, dress for the job, how to talk to a customer, how to operate hood latches, how to properly pour a quart of oil without spilling it all over the motor. It also taught us to handle money, how to make change and count it back to the customer.
Those jobs employed people and was their start in a working life. Next time you drive to your favorite fishing spot count the gas stations and in your mind figure how many jobs are no longer there.
We expect a lot from our youth today but we really provide no meaningful training on how to grow up to be a taxpaying adult.
I will never do a self check-out. No matter how low level a job people consider them a check-out clerk is still a job. Which is much the same reason I resist buying on-line. Jobs are always going to be needed in this country.
I sure would not last long working in a checkout lane. From worrying about making mistakes and those judgmental eyes staring at me I would either be a nutcase at the end of the shift or so jagged by the end of the week no-one would enter my lane.
I admire this gal for trying. I’m sure, given a chance she will improve.

This is a pretty compelling statement actually. This thread started as a bash on “today’s” ie younger society not measuring up, but in reading this comment and those of others its OBVIOUS we ALL have some work to do and are perhaps the starting point for the issues we see with the younger generation. Thanks for you well worded post!
why i head straight for the non manned checkout line whenever possible.
doesn’t matter the store. If i have no choice i head straight for the elderly ladies at the registers. never seem to have a problem.

Excuse me? I bashed no one. I described a situation at a retail store that has tons of similar issues publicly well known. I then went on to ask two questions. Instead of accusing someone of bashing, why not expound on the two questions?
The girl…..I don’t blame her. I blame her parents and possibly even the grandparents. I blame the schools and our educational system that has stuck all this technology in the faces of kids at a too young of an age, an age when they should be figuring things out using a pencil and paper…..using their minds, not finger tips and keyboards.
My comment wasnt intended for Tom’s OP.
But all of you older gentlemen, just remember your the ones that taught all of us younger crowd.

Because they were rhetorical questions.
So you’d like her to pull out a pen and paper and do the math, thus taking more time and holding you and other people up? I don’t think it was the math that was the issue, but rather the transposition of the numbers of 64 vs 36 after you questioned her of the price. A simple mistake that most anyone could make after standing at a register for however many hours and doing the same repetitive job. I think you’ve got too much bitterness to gripe over something as innocent as that mistake.
I want $15hr…
I not only want 15.00 an hour I need it, then I can go to class and learn how to count out change. LOL I really feel sorry for some of the people that cannot count out change. No I don’t make fun of them but it seems like if they are going to be handling money they someone should have made sure they could do it the proper way
Times are changing good or bad , someone told me today they made their kids learn how to drive a stick before they got their drivers licence . Today’s vehicles most are auto, even semis ! Paper and pencil ? I see whats happening in the paper industry , not what it used to be ! Counting change will be a thing of the past with new tech. How many use a plastic card to pay for everything ? And why not most cards offer an incentive to use theirs .Times are changing

Take a deep breath for a second. All of the descriptions you used of the checkout gal was most certainly a bash otherwise why even mention it? It has ZERO impact as to why what happened happened. Which is my point, and I guess what Bearcat was eluding to. Appearance of someone has no impact on whether or not someone can do the job. Obviously there were issues and you were not charged properly and given correct change, but the fact the person was covered in ink or piercings is irrelevant.
It’s irrelevant to those that have them or choose to ignore them. Which by the way is their right, just as it’s my right to think they look like a escapee from the Barnum & Bailey Freak Show.
Finally, oh the bitter irony. Someone shops somewhere for the low-low prices and then complains about the low-low level and quality of the service and employees. You nailed it! Not directed at you Tom, but in general this is an excellent observation.

Ya know, I had the same thought. Even had it typed out. Then deleted it because there was enough gas tossed on this fire.
And as a dad, it’s my right to give Ear Ring Boy (almost, possibly, maybe someday my son in law) as much grief as I see fit.
