We are heading to Canada and not taking the boat. What methods have people used to haul their 8 foot rod tubes when you have a short bed that is covered? I am wanting to keep the tailgate up as the bed will be full of gear. I have some ideas to fabricate something with the stake holes, but seeing what you have to offer. Thanks.

Hauling Rod Tube With Short Bed and Roll Up Cover

Probably not the answer you want but we don’t bring long rods. Get mesh tubes and lay them diagonally across the top. 7’ is about as long as you wanna go.

Build Y support for stake holes, add rod tube and strap it down.
Should be simple enough
June 14, 2019 at 11:09 am #1862188My previous truck had a 5ft bed and was able to get up to 7ft rods in by angling them from corner to corner. The longer rods would have a slight curve but I never had an issue in the 13 years of doing it. Use rod covers and maybe remove reels if needed.

That was my thought.

Yep, this is what I was talking about. We usually remove reels as they sit a little better. Can also wrap something around the tip if you want to.
You could build a pvc tube rod sleeve. Seen that before. Cap 8’ pvc tubes and build a Y bracket to connect. Seems like a lot of work for one trip a year. Seems to me it would be worth it if you use it a lot.

Personally, I would have to router open my stake pockets to put the tube rack on. Not worth it for me. I would rather pick up a few a piece rods for the trip. The Canadian fish are less fussy about the cost of the rod than those US based fish.Alternatively, you could make a hanger using the tonneau cover rods so they hang diagonally above all your stuff.

This exactly. Strap it to the cover. Get a 8 ft PVC with 2 caps. Really easy
June 16, 2019 at 6:32 am #1862407Get the cheaper pocket tie downs that have the threaded eye bolt in the center. As mentioned, fabricate a threaded Y bolt to replace the eye bolt. I have a few contractors that have done this with their wirk trucks to put 10′ pvc pipes on both sides of the bed rail. Works great
The PessimistPosts: 107June 17, 2019 at 4:12 pm #1862682My brother purchased some racks for the roof of his truck. These are easy to install/remove and only cost about $100. Secured a couple of rod tubes to the racks. Worked well.
June 17, 2019 at 8:34 pm #1862718Here is what I used for the caps with 8′ PVC pipe. I put mine on the luggage rack on top of my blazer. Also put it on the outside of my kayak trailer. It’s lockable also.

I used a 6″ zinc angle bracket and bent 1 1/2″ on one end so it did not protrude over the side of the bed. I drilled a 3/8″ hole in the “V” of the bracket and welded in a 3/8″ nut. Using the universal stake pocket mounts that come with the small piece of 3/8″ all thread, you can just spin on the brackets and double nut to keep in place.
