i searched around the web and the DNR website but was not able to find the answers there so i thought i would ask, what are the regulations for the hastings area river fishing walleye seasons? I am relatively new to fishing the river and i know pool 2 is open all year round catch and release only but from what i can tell, it varies down in hastings depending on if you are downriver of the confluence or up the st croix… can anyone explain the regulations to me or post a link to where i can find them?

    Thank You!

The section of the Mississippi from the Hasting Dam #2 downstream to the confluence with the St. Croix river follows the Minnesota inland water regulations since it’s not a border water … Minnesota land on both sides of the river. Downstream of the confluence to the Iowa border the Minnesota/Wisconsin border apply.

If you are south of the train bridge in Prescott you are good. Don’t go towards Hastings and don’t go to the croix.

It’s a confusing area. There are 3 different regulations to abide by.
    1. North of the bridge up the Croix you need to follow the St. Croix border water rules (Walleye opens May 2, 2 lines allowed).
    2. South of the bridge/confluence, down the Mississippi you follow the MN/WI border water rules (continuous season on Walleye, 2 lines allowed).
    3. Up river from the confluence is inland MN waters (Walleye opens May 9, 1 line).

Page 51 on the MN DNR regulations is a good place to start.

Also, there are a lot of wing dams South of Prescott. Many have channel markers by them but not all so use caution.

I still don’t think everything has been covered and some I thought was explained incorrectly.

From what I’ve been around down there the borders are explained right!

I thought Brian posted something about this on the Mississippi walleye forum a while back.

    2. South of the bridge/confluence, down the Mississippi you follow the MN/WI border water rules (continuous season on Walleye, 2 lines allowed).
    3. Up river from the confluence is inland MN waters (Walleye opens May 9, 1 line).

I was going to send the CO an email to clarify this, but it’s written very clearly if we break it down a little more.

First off, remember this is the MN Rules. When in MN follow those rules, when in WI you can follow their more liberal rules. You’ll need the WI rule book as well. (Hey, I just fish here don’t complain to me)

    1. North of the bridge up the Croix you need to follow the St. Croix (Edit:MN/WI) border water rules (Walleye opens May 2, 2 lines allowed or 3 lines/hooks on the WI side).

    2. South of the (Edit:Hwy 10)bridge/confluence, down the Mississippi you follow the MN/WI border water rules (continuous season on Walleye, 2 lines allowed or 3 lines/hooks on the WI side).

Really, the only difference between the St Croix and the Mississippi DOWN stream of Prescott is that there is a season on the St Croix.

    3. Up (Edit: the Mississippi) river from the confluence is inland MN waters (Walleye opens May 9, 1 line).

    MN inland rules apply.

    This nails it very simply.
